Can't find a definition of that word except under "itch emolliently"
an advertisement for herbal remedies with a note that 'english is

Were you making an adverb out of emollient ( a substance that softens
and smoothes the skin)?

Yes, that seems to suit the present discourse well.
Surely somewhere else Mencken mentioned laughter and lighten up?
