Folks,
I apologize if this comes through twice, but I sent it at eleven last night and and it never showed up on in my inbox. I definitely want to clarify by original remarks.

I'm sorry. I didn't mean to come across that way, though I see that I did. My problem is with the idea that if you haven't done anything wrong, what does it matter? That's exactly the argument used in the types of cases I brought up. It's the argument used consistently by those attempting to take away our liberties and our privacy.
And, to tell the truth, there are things that many if not most of us do that violate somebody's rules or laws, often archaic or wrong-headed laws, enforced selectively, aimed at controlling certain groups of people or upholding and protecting vested interests.
The fact is that a government passport file has lots of personal information and it is illegal to access it for that reason. In the case of Barack Obama, he was moving around the world from early childhood and his file is most like immense. And with all the dark insinuations that are made about his schooling, his religious upbringing, etc., even information that is in fact not incriminating, totally innocent, could (would) be twisted and used by the spinners. Basically, it's information that's nobody else's business.
I am sincerely sorry for any sarcasm. It's just an issue I feel very strongly about.
Do I really seem to be making an occupation of "reviving the past?" Gawd. I do lots of things, including writing and my bookselling business, that are grounded in the present. I have become a bit of a (non-academic!) historian, it's true, but because I think there's a lot of our history that's pretty damn interesting and significant, and that needs to be documented and preserved. And that it is likely be overlooked by the professional historians if we don't give them a hand.
I'm not interested in reviving the past -- nor could I if I wanted to! -- though I do think, as a people, we are too ignorant of the past and fail miserably to learn from it.
My regards,
Thorne

Sarcasm doesn't make your case. Of course I didn't mean apprehension and strip searches should be allowed. I am a card carrying, bleeding heart liberal and don't like being mocked, especially by someone whose occupation seems to be attempting to revive the past....no matter how great it might have been when we were babies.
