Max Roach was my greatest influence as a drummer. I saw him perform many times and listened to his records endlessly, stealing as many of his licks as I was capable of playing (not all that many...). He was one of the most influential and creative drummers of all time, a real genius. Only yesterday I was skimming a drummer's page on the internet http://www.drummerworld.com/drummers/Max_Roach.htmland noticing how many great drummers named him as their main influence. His early bands with Clifford Brown and later with Sonny Rollins rank near the top of the list as the greatest jazz bands ever. He knew more about time than most human beings could ever hope to know.

Ah well, it is good that he succeeded in being widely heard and admired...and that so much of his good work is preserved on records. One has to wonder how long the 20th century musicians will be remembered and who among them will be studied in 100 years and recognized as a master. One would hope that he is among them.
