Betty Burkhalter died Saturday, May 19, 2007, after a long illness. She was
born October 20, 1930, in Amarillo, Texas, to Wesley and Effie Burkhalter.
After high school graduation, she came to Austin where she received a B.A.
in Liberal Arts, Magna Cum Laude, from the University of Texas. A masters in
education followed. New York City beckoned and she enjoyed the delights of
the big city working for and meeting stars in the entertainment business.
Upon her return to Texas she joined the staff of the Texas Quarterly where
she worked for 12 years and then worked as a bibliographical editor for the
Bibliographical Society of America with Dr. Todd for 10 years in the English
Department of the University of Texas. Ms. Burkhalter has no surviving
immediate family members but has numerous close friends who will feel deeply
the loss of her grace and beauty, her gentleness and her savvy. Her life was
rich and full of the joy of literature, theater and good music. She loved
travel and had a summer home in New Mexico and in Amarillo. She was a devout
Democrat and she lived gently on the planet. Grace and beauty were her
assets. A graveside service will be conducted by Dick Brooks at the Llano
Cemetery in Amarillo, Wednesday, May 23, 2007, at 11:00 a.m. with Boxwell
Brothers Funeral Directors in charge. Betty requested that in lieu of
flowers, memorials may be made to the Amarillo Museum of Art, 2200 S. Van
Buren, Amarillo, Texas 79109.
