Kathy,

dont be scared of cyber space.

austin-ghetto-list is just: me and Pair.com who run hundreds of servers
hosting many thousands of domain names in Pittsburgh. I pay for their
cheapie Basic FTP account ($4.95 a month) plus $15 a year
registration fee for our for-profit domain name www.charlesumlauf.com

one of the perks of their Basic FTP accounts is the option to have a
maillist
free for nothing.

i dont think you were subscribed back then but i foolishly offered to
host an austin-ghetto maillist. Connie Clark had set up an austin-ghetto
maillist on Yahoo groups which sucked because it had text ads or
colored banners on the bottom of each email. Yahoo's way of paying
for the "free" maillists it hosts.

i soon discovered that the roles of list administrator and mouthing
off are incompatible.

the last email to the list was fontaine's, last before that Connie's.

subsequently my main harddrive went south so i had to switch to
a different harddrive. only this morning i asked myself if our list
was fatally moribund. so i went to the Web based interface where
I (and other maillist owners) run their maillists from. mostly it doesnt
need tending but if subscribers send in an email which breaks the
software rules that Pair.com uses to run its maillists, that email is
held for the administrator to deal with. Checkboxes let the administrator
approve, deny, hold, etc this message. The software used to automatically
email me to deal with pending email. I suspect that the maillist
software has my contact email address as michaele at ando.pair.com

i have switched to mike.eisenstadt at gmail.com (like all them hip
kids dressed in black out late at night) and pair.com has that as
my contact address. but their free maillist and the software they
have written for it most likely has the wrong contact address.

so i never see the requests that i go to their Web page to
deal with pending email.

this morning i went to there to see if anyone had posted anything
since connie's letter about photography. and found fontaine's and
yours, kathy doyle's, which was being held because you didnt
address your email exclusively to austin-ghetto-list at pairlist.net .
rather you put in other email addresses. the software at Pair.com
maillists does not permit cross-posting unless i override the hold and
approve it being distributed to our 60 odd, very odd subscribers.

so when you got your long delayed email to the list you
natchurly wondered why the delay. now you know.

for everyone, dont cross-post with additional email addresses
when you write to the list. otherwise it disappears into a black
hole until i might think to surf to the Web page where Pairlist.net
maillists are administered by maillist owners.

is 294,374 the total number of seconds you had to wait for your email
to show up?

6:49am was apparently the time when i surfed that Web page
and discovered in Archives that fontaine had posted about
a Jaxon memorial party in may. and discovered a pending
from you.

i hope to be introduced to you at the partay. were you around
back in getto daze?

everyone should have their present or once upon a time
photo on our Web site. the web site was cleverly named
by Bob Simmons: www.texasghetto.com com instead of
net and texas instead of austin because . . . now get this!
Simmons explained that he chose Texas because he never
did like Austin all that much. Interesting, no? so fontaine
and karen, when is our web site going back online? or if
not you surely somebody might want to maintain it.
