This concert of sensual and exotic music illuminates the lives of
Sephardic Jews after their expulsion from Spain, which began in
1492. This tragic event triggered the Sephardic Diaspora, which
heavily influenced the traditional music of the Sephardim, both in
thematic content and by the infusion of musical styles from the
countries they moved through and where they eventually settled.
Flavors of both the Iberian Peninsula and the Middle East swirl
through the melodic ornaments and added polyphony, exhibiting the
fruits of Artistic Director Daniel Johnson's continued research into
this repertoire and its traditions.
The many facets of love, from parental to passionate, mythical to
miserable, find frequent expression in this musical genre. Soulful
vocal solos and duets explore these themes, accompanied by the
oriental texture of a medieval instrumental ensemble, featuring
vielles, rebecs, ouds, recorders, santur and medieval harp. The
program will include favorites from the TEMP repertoire, like "Alta,
alta es la luna" and "Adio, querida," as well as recently arranged
songs and dances.
TEMP will feature some of Austin's best singers, including Stephanie
Prewitt, Gitanjali Mathur, Larisa Montanaro, Gil Zilkha and Daniel
Johnson. Special instrumental artists include Therese Honey,
medieval harp, and Austin's Kamran Hooshmand, santur and oud.
