Wayne, Fontaine, et al,
While here Stephen Goldfarb turned me on to another Barbara Ehrenreich tome, "Bait and Switch: The (Futile) Pursuit of the American Dream." This one is the corporate sequel to "Nickled and Dimed," an expose of the situation of the wage slaves of real work. From pages 140 on, in particular, of "Bait" she describes the neuvo-grift-industry she experienced which plays out here in Atlanta--of "services" for the more "professional" job seekers from the middle class. The vultures that play on those euphamistically "in Transition" have taken a turn to becoming Christian-ated. It is pukeable just reading about it. Earlier she says that Atlanta has no heart--no soul either, iMHO.
The ubiquitous jargon-plagued IT employment category, Information Technology, I presume, coincidentally, was the 30-odd year career of my third cousin, once removed, who on Monday died of a heart attack on UT campus on her way to a meeting in the Tower. She was 55.
Stephan graciously treated me to freebie admissions to the marvelous Atlanta History Museum, with a wonderful quilt collection on display, and the High Art Museum which has a marvelolus visiting exhibit from the Louvre--drawings, paintings, and sculpture. There is a lot of high culture here but access to it is pricey. I bought a great t-shirt, "i L(heart)uvre Atlanta." I don't, but still, it is a neat, if ironic, souvenir.
Speaking of souvenirs there was a fundraising shelf at the Peachtree Library where I found an unopened CD by the Austin band, 8 1/2 Souvenirs, for contributions. The title is "Happy Feet." Now, this is music.
On Saturday I'll be getting my Happy Feet back on Austin terra firma. Whew!
Best,
Frances

Frances.
Zit iss vell known zat sie Soccermadchen und Frauleins auf Vannen be sie backbonen auf America.
On the other hand, adult men who are still finding their testosterone levels pumping up over some multi-million dollar hot rod-on-steroids are mostly Bible-thumpinig, beer swilling, pot-bellied, Mario Andretti or Joe Gibbs Wanna-bees beswathed in mis-guided Uber Patriotism with the collective IQ of a sack of beach sand.
I hope my hyperbole hasn't offended anyone. So hard to find the best purple prose these days with so many garish examples of flaccid intellect and amphibi-oid taste these days.
Cheers

Now, now Wayne,
I am a soccer grandmom, taking Michael to practice and games here in Atlanta. Being a soccer adult doesn't make one a conservative. As far as the game goes it seems to be one of the more civilizing of team sports. My son has been playing for years and the guys on the team are all terrific people.
Best,
Frances
