[AGL] nuts in the city

Mike,
Blender, food processor, dehydrator, juicer are very handy. I will deal with
how to do it without electricity when the lights go out. If I planned to
stay in the same place indefinitely I would have a wind and a solar
generator as well as appliances that run on very little juice...a good
investment for the young but not so smart for geezers nearing 70 (unless the
lights go out).

I have found that skills with a knife reduce the amount of chewing required
for good eating. Altho the dentures work well there are some things they
can't do. Besides, I like using a sharp knife (Mars in Scorpio).

Big fad hereabouts this year is solar dehydrators, easy to make, great tool
for preparing food for storage (better than canning). All you need is Sun.

Seems to me that grinding dry grains into powder (flour) is the worst way
for both storage and consumption. I prefer to soak them and then put them in
the food processor with other raw ingredients including dulse, then ladle
them onto a pan , sprinkle on sesame seed, and dry in the dehydrator. What
you get is more of a cracker than bread, better for you than baked bread,
lasts longer too, no butter nor oil nor yeast nor salt. Some people call it
Essene bread. You can do the same thing with fruits and veggies, make them
into "leather". I eat all that I store every year, sometimes run out before
the new crop is ready.

Sitting out yet another shower (getting close to 5" for the month) in NM,
