Mike-- A little internet ressearch tells as that Frank Striker, who created
the Lone Ranger radio series, intended "kemo sabe" to mean "trusted friend."
In the show, both the Lone Ranger and Tonto use this expression As for
"Tonto", "the radio series identified Tonto as a chief's son in the
Potawatomi nation. His name translates as 'wild one' in his own language."

Essentially Striker was trying to avoid hints of racism in the show, but
maybe unconsciously he failed because of the unfortunate connotations of the
word "tonto" in Spanish.-- after all, we can't help being a product of our
time.
