Mike, et.al.,
Comin' to you live from Alpine, news from Phyllis' memorial. Fletcher was there, Stanley Walker not. I called him (Stanley) and he said that he wasn't close to them in the last few years, and not only that, he had met a woman, incidentally named Phyllis, who is his age, (surprise, he only used to want to date 23 year olds) and he has moved in with her in Houston, so he wasn't in Austin for the memorial anyway.
All the others you would expect to be there were. Jap and Ed Shrake gave nice eulogies. Ed's highlight was that he didn't think of Phyllis as dead, merely gone to France. Dorothy, Claudette, Dotsy, Sheila Cheany, Timothy Miller, Bill and David Smith, Bill Head, the Melancholy Ramblers and a few hundred others were in attendance.
The nickname, Jap, was explained in the obituary. I just can't remember it and can't think how to email the obit from the AAS. The obituary also described the wedding ceremony at the Chili Parlour and afterwards at Bull Creek Lodge. This was where I met Phyllis the first time and Jap kissed me so spectacuarly rigtht in front of his new bride. Mike, maybe you can find that obit and post it.
Madeleine Villatoro and I got to Fort Davis right after the parade that was held there on July 1, but we made the festival around the courthouse. On July 2 we met John Avant and had a lovely afternoon visit attending an opening of a new gallery and coffee shop on the main street. Later that evening we had dinner with Lonn and Dedie Taylor at their spectacular home just two and a half years built. They designed it to catch the prevailing cool breezes and we sat out on the screened in poarch with six on their friends who were either visiting from other states or those living out here. Later we enjoyed seated service at dinner for ten. Fabulous. Then off to the fireworks in Fort Davis.
Happy Fourth of July. Madeleine and I are off to the parade.
Best,
Frances

the fact of the matter is that if no-one sends an email, then no-one gets
any email.
i'd write if i could think of something that you'all
might be interested in hearing about. i am curious
about Phyllis Cartwright's memorial which i did
not attend. Phyllis was always very cordial to me
but I cant say that seeing me hove into view ever
seemed to make Jap cheer up. so seeing that Phyllis wouldnt be there, but
Jap would, . . . well, you get the point.
Was Fletcher there? Stanley Walker? Beverly the hairdresser (Phyllis' near
physical clone)? Or others from the Raw Deal crowd? Bud Shrake doubtless was
there.
Mike
