The morning of the opening of Christo's "Gates" in
Central Park, Kelly called us at 7am Austin time
on her cellphone to report to us on it. She said a propos
of the crowd she was standing in I'm surrounded by
poodles.

My friend on 119th street - 10 blocks from the
park - is a grouch. He dissed it and made a
Hare Krishna joke about the saffron color of
the cloth.

I would have liked to have seen the Pont Neuf
wrapped by Christo. This is the most dignified bridge
in Paris and, looking at the photos, you can still see
the peculiar faceted shape of the arches underneath
the cloth. Maybe, just maybe the Pont Neuf
needed to be wrapped for the sake of aesthetic
necessity.
