Dear Connie,
The notion of Tom Muir participating in polite discourse
on a maillist is one I had never considered.
As for the difference between my encounters with
Tom and your lifelong friendship with him is best
explained by the fact that some men are nicer to
women than other men.
I know that you are good friends with him and have even
visited him when he worked in Italy and elsewhere in
Europe.
Tom is a tenured employee of the military/industrial/
academic complex which Eisenhower famously warned
against. He is teaching specialized courses at the U of
Miss in Oxford where, like at UT, they train the next
generation of military researchers. Use it or lose it as
Michael P explained to me when I mentioning our
current lack of enemies with submarines.
Up to a certain point it is necessary to spend bucks
to maintain a cutting-edge military superiority
indefinitely.
