Mike-- I always had it cold (Japan gets pretty cold in the winter, which probably why the "hot saki" custom got started). The Indonesian rice wine that I had tasted less refined and a little sweeter than most saki, although there are a lot of varieties of saki I haven't tasted. By the way, the best saki I've had is from a little company down on Fourth Street in Berkeley-- they make a lot of different flavors, and the stuff is smooth and goes down easy.Of course it's a lot cheaper than Japanese saki, which is plus for me.
