Carolyn-- I agree that our country should be more critical of some of
Israel's excesses in its treatment of the Palestinians. Although the current
administration chides Israel from time to time for certain behavior, such as
building more homes in settlements, reprisal killings, etc., we never back
up the chiding in any particular way, so the Sharon government doesn't take
these comments seriously. Also, of course, it is clear that the
Hamas-Palestinian view of Israel, that it has no right to exist and should
be "suicide bombed" out of existence, is both vicious and unrealistic
doctrine. Furthermore, , it is big simplification to say that Israel led us
into war in Iraq with its "undue influence" and faulty Mossad intelligence.
Israel certainly didn't care for Saddam Hussein and was no doubt glad to see
him go, but we entered Iraq because the Bushies thought it would be easy to
get rid of Saddam and that the people would welcome us with open arms, after
which we would have strong power/economic base in a US-friendly new Iraq.
They were ideologically and strategically wrong, and that's a big reason
why we are in the mess we're in now.
