<P><BR><BR></P>Maybe Theodorkis' attitude towards Jews has more to do with envy rather than the "arrogance" of the Jews-- in many ways, that is the root of the of classic European anti-semitism. Jews traditionally took up professions that gentiles thought beneath them, like finance, and did very well for themselves. Jews had a very high literacy rate when most Europeans were unlettered. Therefore, Jews did well, even with the numerous social restrictions placed upon them, such as having to live in certain districts. The\result of their success became envy, and, in the case of the Nazi scapegoating campaign, t and being shut out of numerious profesions. This envy could easily be turned into active resentment and consent to oppression, particularly on the part of the down and out average German citizen of the Depression years. </DIV>

<DIV></DIV>>Theodorakis' view of the jews is a blend of admiration
<DIV></DIV>>and repugnance. He is correct surely in recognizing that
<DIV></DIV>>the conduct of Israel (the country) reflects the disaster
<DIV></DIV>>that befell the jews at the hands of Hitler and the Germans.

<DIV></DIV>>In Greece itself, Theodorakis is considered a provocative public figure. His transition from left to right to left drew quite a lot of criticism. In spite of that, his name is still mentioned as a possible candidate for president. His status as the most important Greek musician is unquestioned. Even in France, Germany and the Scandinavian countries, Theodorakis is a cultural figure of the first rank. Some consider him a person whose work and life embody the spirit of the contemporary European left.

<DIV></DIV>>In recent years, Mikis Theodorakis has adopted a militant anti-American approach. He criticized the NATO bombings in Serbia, and opposed the war in Afghanistan and the war in Iraq. In 2002 he led the mass anti-Israel rallies in Athens and in Thessaloniki. In November 2003, he aroused an international furor when he was quoted as saying that the Jews are the root of evil.
<DIV></DIV>>
<DIV></DIV>>------------------------------
<DIV></DIV>>
<DIV></DIV>>his correction: the Jews are 'at the root of evil'. and from what I understand him to be saying, has something to do with the sense of superiority that is associated with belonging to a successful group, such as Jews or Freemasons, or Nazis -- Americans (?).
