of Samarra, about 60 miles north of Baghdad, after insurgents 
attacked U.S. troops with a mortar barrage and clashes erupted."

The British bombed dissident Iraqis in the 1920s succeeding
for a time in repressing resistance. They departed Iraq some
years later after putting a complaisant king in place.

This time around, the US has put in a new strongman, a Dr. Alawi
who it is said attended medical school years ago and used to
sport a pistol tucked in his belt.

the situation in Iraq seems to be spinning pretty much out of 
control but a complaisant press keeps its eyes focused only 
on the Bush campaign's spinning against the Democratic 
candidate.

And Kerry has got himself boxed in as a supporter of the
war in Iraq.
