Packy Gunter asked me if the Reunion party went=20
down yesterday. I said I dint know. This was at the=20
Pearl Street co-op College House which is an=20
ENORMOUS complex of buildings: swimming pool=20
and small concrete dorm rooms down long smelly
corridors. We we were manning an election district
in one of the rooms off the main lobby.
I had never been an election clerk before: $9 a hour, my
total was 15 hours. This precinct garnered 40 votes (their
roster which is part of the process of taking votes had=20
maybe 500 plus registered). I don't know what was on=20
the ballot.
Long hours yes and few voters, but we whiled away=20
the time with loud arguments about movies, our=20
election judge being an excentric local lawyer who=20
runs an exiguous law practice from the bedroom of=20
the apartment he had/has from when he was in UT=20
law school many decades. He is quite the movie=20
maven. Two grotesques, a couple from Bastrop, came=20
by to confer with him about their case.
Brunch is served on Saturdays at the Pearl Street=20
Coop in which the election crew is traditionally invited=20
to partake.
You talk about swill! It made Katz's Deli or Threadgill's=20
look good. And the music from their rec room boom=20
box setup which we were next door to seemed to get=20
lamer and lamer and louder and louder as the hours=20
tiptoed on! So we argued movies all 3 of us much of=20
the day and I read in the library book I had so=20
thoughtfuly provided for myself till it came time to=20
dismantle the election booths and put the various=20
color coded documents in the various color coded=20
envelopes and go home.
As for the swill (in the context of the broken furniture and=20
comely young students male and female and the loud
music), as the students do kitchen chores, the menu is=20
actually a race to the bottom. I would rather live in a box=20
on the street than live and thus eat at the Pearl St Coop.=20
Still and all the students seem reasonably happy as=20
they wandered in and out of the pool into the lobby/eating
area and took and made calls on their cellphones.
Two students sorta hung out in the voting room, one
large and silent, the other hyper and voluble. Packy
said the motormouth one was suffering from small guy=20
syndrome and he might have been right.
