Byron,
I remember feeling my skin crawl when I saw a segment on tv about a land mine, one of millions, and they gave us a close up of the opened container--a chip inside was printed with the word Motorola. We have the munitions factory right here in Travis County, Oak Hill.

I simply meant that when a nuke goes off downtown in an American city, as is generally thought to be a probable case (if not in the near then in the distant future) real estate values will be but a dream. For the half-life of all the trace radioactive elements... say, seventy-five years or so?

Why has no one commented on the fact that the US, as the world's premiere seller of death (arms exports since WWII), often exporting jets and other such frippery to raggedy-ass countries in Latin America, Asia and Africa that don't even feed their people, is simply going to get some of the backlash. What goes around goes around.

The argument is "Well if we didn't sell them napalm and land mines then somebody else would". Funny, that's precisely the line of reasoning taken by dope dealers.

What is this about Wayne's real estate investments in downtown Houston? That doesn't sound right--was it just amusing imagery? It would be interesting to hear more about his time in Houston and acquaintance with Roy Hofheinz, but I didn't get the impression that he dabbled in Houston real estate investing.

Wayne, I think the problem is that the defense planners may all be frisky youngish bureaucrats who did not grow up in the good ole "balance of terror" days.

To make it perfectly clear, nukes are not our friends. And just because we happen to have all the cute little suitcases locked up safely in Omaha today doesn't mean some disgruntled McVey won't nick one next Thursday and take off with it.

One of these defense types recently pontificated that (and I love the fancy-dancy language) there would most likely be a "non-test nuclear event in an American city" within the not too distant future. Even a teentsy one (1kt) would make the WTC events seem trivial.

Well, so much for your real estate investments in downtown Houston slum buildings.

Ever read Herman Kahn's On Thermonuclear Warfare or Thinking About the Unthinkable. True today as then.

The image came off the Web, Frances.

The unspeakably stupid shits in Washington are trying their best to create a new generation of pocket-sized, plug-and-play nuclear weapons.

Just what we need at this point in timespace: more tiny loose nukes.

"But they're only another weapon, just like gunpowder or napalm!" they rationalize.

Wrong, as any cursory study of post-WWII history will reveal. Once you cross that firebreak, you open Alice's box. Once you start to nuke the ragheads, no matter how compact and comfy the weapon, you give them free license to return the favor.

And who needs that?
