what do we do

Connie-- Being retired is a big adjustment or a small one, depending on how
much of one's identity has been invested in the job. It was hard for me in
the first couple of years to adjust to this-- I felt as if a leg and an arm
had been cut off, but then I flashed back on what I had often wanted to
do but couldn't because I never "had the time." Being retired, we have all
the time we need, yet it still may not seem to be enough. At the very
least, we gain the opportunity to explore paths we would have taken earlier
if we hadn't always been overscheduled. That can be very exciting! Yet I
still keep working a few hours a week because I have issues with teaching (
my old career) that I want to resolve; plus, I can always use a little extra
money beyond my meager pension. So it can work out very well-- but it takes
a lot of thought and determination, like anything else that's worthwhile.
