A True but Tragic Story
===================================================

One day Beethoven was working away at his newest
composition.

Suddenly, his hearing returned ... for just a few
minutes.

He listened intently to his musical creations. (He had
a CD player.) For the first time in years, he could
hear the music. It was crystal clear. Now he heard
what everyone else had been hearing. For these brief
moments, his hearing restored, he heard the music that
the world heard.

My God, he said. That wasn't what I meant at all.

Then his hearing vanished again and he was restored to
blissful ignorance.

DISCUSS AMONG YOURSELVES:

a) How likely is it that Beethoven had a CD player?

b) When he said, "My God!" did he say this in German,
Austrian, or Serbo-Croatian?

c) Did this episode appear in the recent movie of his
life?

d) Why not?

e) When Beethoven wrote the words, "My immortal
beloved" was he

..........i) thinking of his nephew
.........ii) his maid Sophie
........iii) was he trying out for a part as Gollum in
the Lord of the Rings
