Crime in the countryside seems to be less than crime
in the metro areas. Population has something to do
with it I am sure. The lack of jobs, poverty and a
lack of any sort of real system of control other
than that of the people themselves. Once displaced
the people are on their own. In the village they
have family and that has a mediating effect.
I would have never considered vandalism or theft at
home in Round Rock because everyone knew me and my
parents and grandparents but I could paint the
Georgetwon football field blue or burn RR into it
with impunity unless the Georgetowners caught me at
which point they beat the shit out of me.
Of course in war zones crime is a lot more probable
such as in the south of Mexico. Lots of people with
guns seem to give the carriers of guns more importance
and they use their guns and such as a way to get a
few dollars or a lot of dollars.
I was robbed three times in Bogota, Colombia and
never worried much about it. Getting shot was always a
concern but the same guy robbed me each time until
the time I told him I was pretty tired of it, and lets
go have a beer to which he agreed and I was never
robbed again by that fellow.
