Bill White had all the money, especially after November,
into the runoff, all the big money in town put it on him,
figuring he would win. Thus a landslide. Bill White is
a Democrat, just as Bob Lanier (another former mayor) is
a Democrat, but runs with the oil and real estate rich
crowd in this town. I think Bill White will do a good job.
It is far more impressive to me that Annise Parker (lesbian)
won the job of City Controller (very powerful and high-
profile office) over a staunch Republican. And a relatively
young and unknown black man won his race defeating another
big Republican, former councilman. Feels a little like a
rug was pulled under the right-wing march.

Connie,
I read in the paper this morning that a Dem just took the mayorship
of Houston by a whopping 68% to 32%: grounds for some optimism, no?
I thought of Dukakis when I was writing my email, another
short type person. As voting decisions in a democracy rest on
random impulses on the part of unintelligent people, shortness
can be significant: Reagan was physically more impressive than
Carter for example, especially when riding a horse.
