MADMAN LOOKING FOR A FIGHT
[Title from Van Morrison, "Snow in San Anselmo"]
Aram forwards (see below) a web piece suggesting,
tongue in cheek, that the recent Supreme Court
decisions are a Republican Conspiracy, with the goal
of depriving Democrats of one of their issues.
* * *
Are the Supreme Court decisions a secret conspiracy?
If so, not because it deprives the Democrats of an
issue. It does so because it provides a new way of
rousing the Bible Belt in righteous anger in the next
election.
* * *
Here's a previous example which DID work along these
lines.
The Republican Leadership killed the impeachment
proceedings against Clinton. Why?
By leaving Clinton in office they were able to keep
him as a target for the campaign. Clinton was a "red
flag" with the anger directed against Gore.
This strategy of channeling "anger" and "rage" may
represent a sincere element of fascism in the Bush
leadership or simple bad temper and
oportunism.[*-footnote]
------------------------------------------------
[*-footnote] The bad temper and frequent nastiness of
the Bush leadership was often in evidence. The model
is "outrage" against liberal and countercultural and
uppercrust behavior, similar to that utilized by the
fascists in the 30s.
--------------------------------------------------
The Bush "rage" paid off ... not least of all in
putting Gore on the defensive when he had the nerve --
the EFFRONTERY! -- to win the election.
How dare he? "We were robbed!" shouted the Bush
lawyers and leaders -- meaning, they didn't win the
election when the polls and complacent journalists had
been paid to say that Bush was "more popular", even
that Bush was "incredibly popular." Yeah, but not
enough to win an election.
What an injustice! It's like not finding wmd in Iraq
when they were never there! We were robbed!
In other words, the tactic of the bully, both
nationally and internationally.
* * *
Rush Limbaugh was one of the soldiers in the hate and
anger war, spending every day castigating Gore as
Clinton deux.
Gore was certainly wooden and lame, and for many of us
who are not strongly sympathetic to the combination of
philistinism and pompous stuffiness that characterized
big nanny liberalism, Gore certainly was no favorite;
but he wasn't *that* bad.
His chief fault certainly wasn't that he was like
Clinton; in fact, politically, his chief fault was
that he *wasn't* like Clinton; he wasn't sufficiently
a scoundrel. He was square. And square is not hip.
The Bush people were careful, by the way, to let us
know that Bush was a drug addict and drunkard (being
ignorant was lagniappe.)
However much some people like scoundrels, for any one
with sympathy to American ideals, the contrast is
painful between having a wooden prig like Gore as
President and having the current dumb bunny presiding
over an administration initiating international wars
every two years and finishing off America civil
liberties ... and about to utilize the politics of
"rage" again.
* * *
Interestingly enough, the "anger" motif was all ready
to use when nine-eleven took place.
The fact that Bush had ignored the warnings of an
impending terrorist attack and that he had refused to
strengthen American air defense is, needless to say,
ignored, not least among the kept press.
* * *
So ...
A Republican conspiracy? :-)
Supreme Court decisions for Republicans to use to
rally new bursts of anger from their Bible Belt
constituents?
Bill Frist is already up on the front page announcing
he will vote for an amendment to ban Gay Marriage.
The politics of rage is about to start.

THE SILENT MAJORITY
We suggested that frustrated Democrats might run Strom
Thurmond as their candidate for President. Yes, he is
no longer a Democrat. A minor hurdle, compared to some
of the other hurdles.

DEFEAT A MAJOR VICTORY, SAYS KUCINICH
We discussed Kucinich's "elated" statement that coming
in second in the MoveOn primary was a "major victory."
On the other hand, we admitted, Dubya came in second
in the last Presidential race. And look where HE is,
now.
