Harry Harvill was from Beaumont and started U.T. in the Plan II group of
1962, same as me. He and I were freshman sweethearts, but there was
another small group of friends we socialized with, Arthur Ramirez, and Bill
somebody. We had intellectual discussions, accompanied by beer, on
weekends when I wasn't going to a Ranger party or a ghetto party. I don't
think Harry was involved with the ghetto group. Harry and Bill went off to
the Vietnam war. Harry became kind of a quintessential soldier, and Bill
was killed in the war. When Harry came back from the war, I found that I
could not relate to the soldier attitude. He was not the sweet, quiet,
poetry-reading person I remembered.
Harry taught himself German in high school and played the French Horn in
the band. He taught me how to play the recorder, and we played duets
sometimes. The distinguishing thing about his appearance--he wore a little
short moustache like Hitler.
