Subject: Family Time Flexibility Act & Kucinich's opinions
Thanks to whoever it was that sent on the Molly Ivins write-up on HR
1119. This is an issue I feel strongly about, having been a working
single Mom. I went to the bill and status on House web site and found
that it has been passed from the subcommittee (April 4 to the
Committee). It is disgusting to read the Repubs send up on this bill.
They have the gaul to quote Clinton1 and Clinton2 (1996 and 1997) about
the need for flexible time for families. From that they say this bill
gives the Clinton goal for family time with kids. US Rep George Miller
(D-CA) made a straight-up retort to the Committee against the bill
(April 9), echoing much of what Molly said, read it at:
http://edworkforce.house.gov/democrats/rel4903b.html
Since my Rep is a newbie, not so savvy, and not a good liberal and can
be swayed to the Republican side, I took the time to write him a note
urging him to vote 'no' if it comes before Congress for a vote.
---------
On another email post from Linda Weatherby about Representative Dennis
Kucinich: I was a little disappointed about the assessment and looked
him up. He is indeed a good guy in many ways, and I would hate to
elminate him from the Democratic presidential hopeful pack on the
judgment of a friend of a friend. Since he tends toward holistic,
healthy living, supporting the environment, is a vegan and has problems
with genetic altered foods, wants to protect small furry
creatures...well I think that his thinking on abortion might run along
the lines of opposing the 'partial birth abortion' or late trimester.
But anyway, I found the following statement from him on that issue:
(excerpt)
"Control of the Congress, White House, and by power of appointment, the
federal judiciary, has occurred at a time when the national Republican
Party has pledged to enact legislation that would criminalize abortion.
They have committed to an increasingly aggressive campaign. In
recognition of this, I have found that the abortion-related legislation
being brought to the House floor no longer reflects my position. Last
year, I withheld my support from a number of bills.
I don't believe in abortion. I do, however, believe in choice.
...I believe that women have the right to determine their reproductive
choices, and I believe that criminalizing abortion is unconstitutional.
I do not believe that Roe v. Wade should be overturned."
(found on the Kucinich web site
http://www.house.gov/kucinich/
amongst statements about other topics that may be of interest).
