I posted this last night but don't know if the list was working.

Jaxon,
I gave Ventura his start at the old Austin Sun, but since we've had a
falling out. That his writing is often puffed-up, self grandizing, and
over-wrought is obvious. He wasted his talent as much as anyone I know.
He wrote a screen play on Cuba, Fidel and Che that would have been =
laughably
bad if it wasn't so unoriginal. Luckily it was never produced. When I =
told
Ventura that I could introduce him to old veterans in Cuba who fought =
with
Che and knew inside stuff, he replied grandly: "I don't fly". He wasn't
interested in real research.
So frankly I don't think his opinion of your work matters much. Your =
work,
scholarship, and basic sense of human fairness stands on its own. You =
don't
need Ventura to validate you.
It's too bad that you were slammed in the Chronicle. But who plays fair?
And in the big picture it doesn't matter much. Your work will live on =
its
own far longer than the sniping of Chronicle critics.
