My "Lost" Jug Band Post

Hi gang! I tried to send a reply to buzz about the Jug Band party at
Gilbert's, but I'm a rookie in cyberspace & don't think it went through. So
I'm trying again....

I remember this party well, it being thrown for the biggest national, hip
music act to hit Austin to date--much less to appear at one of our parties.
I brought my handy SONY tape recorder (bought from a hard-up Mike Allen,
trying to raise money to leave austin) & my intention was to tape music at
the party. Someone with the band (their business agent?) objected, saying
their record contract prohibited such tapes floating around. Well, as the
party progressed & everybody got in the groove, etc. rules didn't seem so
important. I managed to tape quite a bit of the music and copies then
circulated among the group. Don't think I even still have a copy of this
tape, but perhaps zome of you do.

Naturally we were all hoping that Janis would come & show these hot
out-of-towners that we were not just a cow pasture & had some class-act
talent of our own. As I recall Janis made an appearance in her coonskin cap
and bulky sweater but didn't sing & left early in a scornful manner. I've
always imagined it was because she didn't want to be seen as "competing"
with that gypsy sex goddess, Sweet Maria.

Many of the locals did strut their stuff at the party, however, John Clay
especially. I think that Pepi (something of a sex goddess herself) sang &
some of the Waller Creek boys played, even tho Janis didn't. Correct me if
I'm wrong. Maria's "I'm a long tall Texan" brought the house down & went on
forever, new verses being improvised with drunken abandon. God, wish I
still had this tape!! But what really impressed me at this party was
Gilbert's piano playing. I didn't know he was so good. jaxon
