<html><div style='background-color:'><P>Mike recently sent out an email on interviews with young middle eastern men scheduled nationally in the US-- I replied that this smacked of racial profiling, as many civil liberterians have commented. The FBI has tried to make these interviews resemble simple information gathering, and they are supposed to be "voluntary"--yet if a person doesn't comply at all, that would certainly put one on a "suspicious persons" list. In addition, the interviews ask that the interviewee turn over frequently-called numbers, which then can easily go on a "wire tap" list. The men are allowed to have a lawyer present (I don't know what happens if they can't afford one-- maybe they provide a public defender. Some states and are currently debating how far they want to comply with this controversial program. I thought you might like to see the interview guidelines to judge for yourselves rather you would find such an interview scary if you were among the 5000:</P>
