My ladyfriend (from Portland, Oregon) read this and said just by changing
locations, particular names/events, it could hold for any other former oasis
of "humanism" that became a high-tech "Silicone (insert your favorite
geo-morphological
feature)". The same thang's happened elsewhere. Austin is hardly unique in
this.
