The word Sophistry comes from a combination of two words of Macedonian
origin, Sophocles and Chemistry. The actual word, itself, can be dated from
a fragment of a play by Xenonaphon, a contemporary of Anaxamendar of
Alexandria. The fragment consists of one word...written in Old Greek:
Sophistranous However, German linguist and philologist Johann Nieztche
determined in his epic work Till Death Spake Zarathrustra, that philogically
speaking, it made perfect sense to him that a play would be written about a
playwright and his relationship with his audience, ie. "chemistry". That
Johann also thought Kepler and Copernicus were faggots and agents of the
Pope lead some to doubt his credibility as a scholar. Many dissertations
have been devoted to teasing out this difference. All to the greater wealth
of knowledge and advancement of mankind. Or womankind. I digress.
To many , Sophistry can be used as either a verb or a noun or a gerund. Not
to be confused with either Sophisticated (which means, more like a sophomore
than anyone I know) or Sophomore (which means, unspeakable eater of guano in
Pharo-Ugric.) In popular parlance, to be a Sophistry is to be like a
Presidential candidate or even an actual President.
I hope this helps.
:-)
Wayne
