Issue using ZC (zerocopy) interface notation

Hey Chris,
Oh, I don’t think we’re getting bad responses. Argus doesn’t use all the libpcap features. Argus has been using libpcap since the first day that it was released (argus predates libpcap), but argus lags in its use of newer features. Unfortunately, we maybe a few years behind libpcap now, as I don’t have the time to keep up with libpcap, pcap-ng, all the card vendors, NetMap, PF_RING, and all the OS’s that we need to support, so getting some experience from the community is really important to not wasting a lot of time. We’ve had really good experience with the DAG card support, as they keep Argus in line with their changes pretty quickly.

I will integrate whatever proves to be the best strategy, when they are ready to go, and would like to lean on libpcap as the open source focus, if possible. But there are some issues with adopting new features toooo soon.

The polling thing is really interesting, as some OS’s, like Solaris, do very well with the polling strategies that we use, but many variants of linux don’t (100%). We should fix that with argus-3.0.9, if we can get enough guinea pigs to test out some code.

We do have calls to routines like pcap_findalldevs() which may have these interfaces in the list, allowing us to know, rather than having to guess, if these interfaces need exceptional logic.
