Hey Phillip,
Yes, it probably should be escaped. The thought is/was that you could use encode32 or encode64 rather than ascii, but that isn't as helpful because you can't read it.
I'll add that tonight/this week, before the 3.0.4 release. Bug me if its not done soon.

Within XML output, some of the fields have escaped characters in them.
I.E. '<' becomes '<' in the 'dir' direction field. Should this
behavior also carry into 'suser' and 'duser' data fields?
I think it should since the other fields are also already escaped and to
not do so makes parsing the suser/duser fields a pain.
I'm using 3.0.3.14 clients to do my parsing.
