OK, I'll do that. rc.3 did eventually obey a HUP (it took a very long
while though :-)) without seg faulting on corrupted blocks which may point
at -RJ or U as a source of memory corruption.

hcids:/scratch # kill -HUP 23453
hcids:/scratch # ps auxwwww | grep argus
root 23453 9.4 96.8 3821080 3810828 pts/1 RL 09:18 18:59 argus -P 560 -i eth0 -i eth1 -m -F /scratch/argus.conf
root 24015 0.0 0.0 3132 832 pts/1 S+ 12:39 0:00 grep argus
hcids:/scratch # ps auxwwww | grep argus
root 24022 0.0 0.0 3132 832 pts/1 S+ 12:44 0:00 grep argus
[1]+ Done argus -P 560 -i eth0 -i eth1 -m -F /scratch/argus.conf >/scratch/debug.log 2>&1

It also gave memory stats on the shutdown (but seems to think it only
had 2 gigs of ram when the system figured it was closer to 4 gigs):

hcids:/scratch # cat debug.log

I'll restart the rc.2 argus and see what happens.
