Not sure what all the supported platforms are, so I can't give you a
serious answer...

I'll defer to the other folks who use non-Linux systems on this one...

However, we could still get rid of all the ARGUSMEMDEBUG ifdef-ed
code, regardless of whether we end up replacing the alignment magic
with posix_memalign()...
