OK folks, this is where I confess I am an idiot :)

I posted a note to OBSD Misc yesterday briefly describing the problems and asking if there had been any memory management changes that might have revealed lurking bugs.  I got one response saying -- have you checked ulimit ?  Oops!

I went and checked and low and behold the cur_memory was set to 75MB (although max was set to infinity -- I don't know what the difference is).  Anyway I set cur_memory to infinity and restarted argus -- several hours ago and and it is still running happily.

Sigh..., Moral to the story is don't feel afraid to ask people with problems if they have checked to obvious!  I keep forgetting that OBSD have lower limits than Linux and yes, I have tripped over this before in a different context.
