	False alarm. Looks like my sasl changes are the cause of my FreeBSD
problems (my Mac is currently asleep on my desk so I can't poke it :-)).
Recompiling with stock fixes1 makes it work among all of FreeBSD 4.7, 4.9 and
4.10 on sockets. I'll see if I can talk our Beowolf maintainer out of an 
account on one of his SUSE boxes and have a bash from FreeBSD to Linux (since
I'm the most likely one to have both :-)). I don't think we have any RedHat
boxes (other than 7.3 anyway) any more.
