I thought that the discussion was just about prepackaged binaries (rpms 
and debs).  If you build from the tar then you can do what ever you 
like.  I assume configure supports --prefix.  Personally I don't bother 
with make install, I just move the binaries by hand.

For the argus perl scripts I am doing the install relative to 
$ARGUSHOME or $HOME, with bin and lib dirs under that.  I hope to have 
a second release on Monday (my time).  This will be mainly to test the 
unpacking and installation.  I'll spend some time working up the real
Argus::Archive.pm after that.
