**** Mac OS X's 'QuarantineEvents' Keeps A Log Of All Your Downloads ****
<http://www.tuaw.com/2012/02/14/mac-os-xs-quarantineevents-keeps-a-log-of-all-your-downloads/>
TJ Luoma, TUAW

> What most Mac OS X users probably don't know is that Mac OS X keeps a log of all files downloaded. Files are added to that log even if you are using "private" browsing in Safari or "incognito" in Google Chrome, and the log does not appear to ever be cleared.

> Even so, Don't Panic: there is no evidence that this information is shared with Apple or anyone else. You do not need to be worried about Apple telling anyone that you torrented all of the episodes of Downton Abbey. The only one who has access to this information is anyone with access to your account.

**** Fair Labor Association Begins Inspections Of Foxconn ****
<http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2012/02/13Fair-Labor-Association-Begins-Inspections-of-Foxconn.html?sr=hotnews.rss>
Apple

> Apple® today announced that the Fair Labor Association will conduct special voluntary audits of Apple’s final assembly suppliers, including Foxconn factories in Shenzhen and Chengdu, China, at Apple’s request. A team of labor rights experts led by FLA president Auret van Heerden began the first inspections Monday morning at the facility in Shenzhen known as Foxconn City.

> “We believe that workers everywhere have the right to a safe and fair work environment, which is why we’ve asked the FLA to independently assess the performance of our largest suppliers,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO. “The inspections now underway are unprecedented in the electronics industry, both in scale and scope, and we appreciate the FLA agreeing to take the unusual step of identifying the factories in their reports.”

**** Reduce Visual Clutter In Microsoft Word ****

TJ Luoma, TUAW

> I know a lot of people who hate Microsoft Word. The two complaints that I hear most often are that it's slow to launch and extremely cluttered. Fortunately, there are some things you can do to make it better. I'll walk you through the steps that I take whenever I'm setting up Word on a new computer.

**** Create A Bootable Lion Install Drive For Newer Macs ****
<http://www.macworld.com/article/165337/2012/02/create_a_bootable_lion_install_drive_for_newer_macs.html#lsrc.rss_main>
Dan Frakes, Macworld

> When Lion debuted, I explained how to create a bootable Lion-installer drive from the Mac App Store version of Lion. But if you have a Mac that debuted after Lion (any Mac from July 2011 or later), your Mac shipped with Lion pre-installed. In other words, you don’t have a downloadable version of the installer unless you happened to purchase Lion for another, older Mac. Apple does offer a utility for creating an emergency Lion Recovery drive but, like the standard Lion Recovery feature, this drive requires you to download the full 4GB of Lion each time you want to install—it’s better to have the full installer on a bootable drive.

> Hewlett-Packard just announced a new line of business computers. They include sensors in the racks and wires, and smart software. Perhaps it should also include a small prayer that its customers do not change too much or too fast.

**** Table For 2 ****
<http://www.chicagotribune.com/features/food/ct-dining-0209-romance-tale-20120209,0,3544732,full.story>
Kevin Pang, Chicago Tribune

> I met a blue-eyed girl 1,135 days ago. Her name is Anne. Our lives first crossed at a New Year's Eve party teeming with unfamiliar faces and red Solo cups. We were bumper cars, swerving aimlessly from stranger to stranger, that kept running into each other.

> We started talking, and soon it became clear we shared a love of food. We talked recipes for Thanksgiving turkey (stuffing goes beneath skin) and spaghetti carbonara (lardons, no cream). We compared how many of our favorite restaurants overlapped. I went home that night, her face on my mind, and like anyone with whom I have a passing interest, I Googled the bejesus out of her.

**** The Value Of A Quiet Voice ****
<http://www.newstatesman.com/books/2012/02/short-story-mrs-pritchett>
William Trevor, New Statesman

> The origins of the short story in different regions of the world - where it came from and when, how it developed - vary from country to country. Although its birth was most often a natural transformation of what was there already, occasionally the change that occurred was more dramatic, coming from nowhere, without a pedigree of tradition or of anything else. The vitality of America's first stories owes much to such newness, to an untrammelled purity that challenged, without being at odds with, the classicism of Russia's vast contribution to the same literary development. In Europe - particularly perhaps in France and Germany - the influence of the antique continued, then slowly withered.

**** Lemon Law Proposed In Parliament, Could Take Effect By Sept ****
<http://www.todayonline.com/Singapore/EDC120214-0000147/Lemon-law-proposed-in-Parliament,-could-take-effect-by-Sept>
Sharon See, Channel NewsAsia

> Consumers can expect better protection against unfair business practices come September, if proposed changes to legislation are passed in Parliament.

> Among the proposals are the introduction of a "lemon law", which will allow consumers to have a product replaced or repaired if a defect is found within six months of delivery. It would be assumed that the defect existed at the time of delivery, unless the retailer proves otherwise.

**** Singapore Among World’s Most Expensive Cities ****
<http://blogs.wsj.com/searealtime/2012/02/14/singapore-among-worlds-most-expensive-cities/?mod=WSJBlog&utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter>
Jason Chow And Shibani Mahtani, Wall Street Journal

> Moving to Singapore? Start saving: The city-state is one of most expensive cities in the world – 42% more expensive than New York – topping London, Frankfurt and Hong Kong.

> Singapore’s rise is notable, since less than a decade ago it was considered a cheap city by Western standards. Just last year, a kilo of bread would have cost US$2.86, according to the Economist’s data, but now costs US$3.19 – an 11% increase from the year before.

**** Sufficiency Of Hospital Beds For The Critically Ill ****
<http://www.moh.gov.sg/content/moh_web/home/pressRoom/Parliamentary_QA/2012/Sufficiency_of_hospital_beds_for_the_critically_ill.html>
Ministry Of Health, Singapore Government

> We recognise that the demand for such facilities would increase as our population ages with increasing prevalence of chronic diseases coupled with advances in medical treatment that enable treatment of increasingly more complex cases. We would thus be increasing the number of high dependency and intensive care beds even as we increase the overall number of public hospital beds. At the same time, we need to use these facilities appropriately and ensure right siting so that only patients who need HD and ICU beds are warded in such facilities.

**** Ex-CNB, SCDF Chiefs' Case Addressed In Parliament ****
<http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/singaporelocalnews/view/1182921/1/.html>
Imelda Saad, Channel NewsAsia

> Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean has stressed that there was no way the two high ranking civil servants involved in a probe by the Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau (CPIB) would have influenced investigations. That was because both men were immediately placed on leave the day CPIB arrested them, he said.

**** An Indictment Of The PAP's Policy By LKY ****
<http://www.yoursdp.org/index.php/news/singapore/5132-an-indictment-of-the-paps-policy-by-lky>
Singaore Democratic Party

> The real problem is that the PAP does not have the will and the courage to go through with such its own plan because like someone who is inebriated, the party is not thinking beyond the next drink. The temptation is simply too powerful.

> As quickly as the words left the MM's mouth, the Ministry of Manpower was taking them back. In 2011 it reversed course and recruited 85,000 foriegn workers, up 38 percent from 53,000 in 2010.

> Our economy is drifting. Worse, the Government doesn't have any idea on how we should proceed. The fact that we have had four recessions in the past 15 years is indicative of the quality of the PAP's economic policy.

Harry Ng, Straits Times

> The truth is that smartphones and tablets are taking up readers' time that would otherwise be used for patronising bookstores and reading books.

Nonsense. With iPods and iPhones, I read more books as I can listen to audiobooks even when I am walking or taking a train. With Google Reader and Instapaper, I can catch up on my newspaper and magazine readings easily.
People who only play Angry Birds on the train will probably not be reading even if you take away their iPhones.

**** Family Centres Can Be More Sensitive ****

> Based on the above examples, if you belong to PAP, it may take days or weeks. However if you are not connected, it may take months or years! If you happen to be a taxi driver like Mr Tan, good luck to you! If not for the presence of Mr Liew and Mr Wong, the atrocious beating of Mr Wong by the foreign talents may not have seen the light of day!
