**** Boom 1.1 <http://www.macworld.com/article/160402/2011/06/boom1.html#lsrc.rss_main>
Jonathan Seff, Macworld
In general, I found the EQ settings more useful on a regular basis than the volume improvements. But if youâre in a crowded or noisy environment and need to hear whatâs coming out of your Mac, Boom might be quite helpful.

**** Critic's Notebook: Jack Kerouac's 'On The Road' Book App Is A Road Trip And A Map To The Future <http://www.latimes.com/features/books/la-et-on-the-road-20110622,0,5717729.story?track=rss&utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+features%2Fbooks+%28Los+Angeles+Times+-+Books%29>
David L. Ulin, Los Angeles Times
There's a certain poetic justice in the fact that "On the Road" is one of Apple's top-grossing book apps. Released on Saturday, the iPad app for Jack Kerouac's landmark novel â featuring a variety of enriched content, including commentary, maps, audio recordings and other ephemera â hit No. 4 on Apple's list on Tuesday, ahead of the Bible and T.S. Eliot's "The Waste Land." That's a testament to the power of the digital project, but also to the novel, which has occupied a visionary place in the culture since it was first published in 1957.

**** OS X FileVault Passwords Not All That Hard To Crack <http://www.macgasm.net/2011/06/22/os-filevault-passwords-hard-crack/>
Eugene Huo, Macgasm
Basically the instructions boil down to finding the password hash, cutting and pasting it into a password cracking app like John the Ripper, and waiting.
**** Too Broad Or Too Narrow? Apple Multitouch Patent Sparks Debate <http://arstechnica.com/apple/news/2011/06/too-broad-or-too-narrow-apple-multitouch-patent-sparks-debate.ars>
Jacqui Cheng, Ars Technica
What's clear is that Apple's recent moves to aggressively defend its intellectual property has left everyone on edgeâso much so that even the narrowest of patents are now receiving extra scrutiny from experts and non-experts alike.
**** Apple Starts Over With New Final Cut Pro X <http://tidbits.com/article/12274?rss>
Jeff Carlson, TidBITS
With Appleâs release of Final Cut Pro X this week, I think the company chose to soft-announce its high-end video editing application so it wouldnât come as such a shock to many of its power users. This version is a complete rewrite, emphasizing speed and flexibility and a new platform on which to build future versions. It also lacks some important features and capabilities that current Final Cut Pro 7 owners rely on.

Instead, Apple's patent details a very specific set of gestures used to navigate around Web pages on a mobile, touch screen device.

**** AutoCAD 2011 <http://www.macworld.com/article/159942/2011/06/autocad11.html#lsrc.rss_main>
Greg Miller, Macworld
If you are a longtime user of AutoCAD for Windows, you might want to wait for the next version (AutoCAD 2012 is due before the end of the year), which will no doubt fill in some of the missing features and provide a better value. If you are new to AutoCAD, unconcerned about the price, and crave the native DWG file format and peace of mind using AutoCAD provides, then this version will work fineâand you can look forward to an upgrade soon.

**** My Disillusionment: China, 1973 <http://www.nybooks.com/blogs/nyrblog/2011/jun/22/my-disillusionment-peoples-republic-1973/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+nybooks+%28The+New+York+Review+of+Books%29>
Perry Link, New York Review Of Books
The first time I tried to go to China was in 1967, the year after I graduated from college. My father was a radical leftist professor who admired Mao Zedong. And that influence, along with the Vietnam War protestsâa movement in which I was not only a participant but an activistâled me to look at socialist China with very high hopes.
**** My Life As An Undocumented Immigrant <http://www.nytimes.com/2011/06/26/magazine/my-life-as-an-undocumented-immigrant.html?_r=2&pagewanted=all>
Jose Antonio Vargas, New York Times
One day when I was 16, I rode my bike to the nearby D.M.V. office to get my driverâs permit. Some of my friends already had their licenses, so I figured it was time. But when I handed the clerk my green card as proof of U.S. residency, she flipped it around, examining it. âThis is fake,â she whispered. âDonât come back here again.â

**** Singapore Without Lee Kuan Yew <http://www.eastasiaforum.org/2011/06/23/singapore-without-lee-kuan-yew/>
Michael D Barr, East Asia Forum
The positive implication is that Lee will be a less disruptive influence on regional relations. His many inappropriate comments about neighbours will no longer be directly associated with the Singapore government. For decades he has been a loose cannon in Singaporeâs foreign relations with a bad habit of offending neighbours like Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and the Philippines.
The negative implication is that Lee will not be there to contribute to good relations with Malaysia. As contradictory as it seems in light of the previous point, Lee Kuan Yew has built very strong relations with the Malaysian elite, and these have weathered the tribulations of his loose tongue.

It is clear that the civil service has not improved on their attitude of lackadaisical indifference. They are just interested in going by the book. There is no sense of initiative and pride in their role in serving society.
