**** OS X Lion's Download-only Distribution Will Hurt Retailers <http://www.computerworld.com/s/article/9217543/OS_X_Lion_s_download_only_distribution_will_hurt_retailers?source=rss_operatingsystems&utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+computerworld%2Fs%2Ffeed%2Ftopic%2F123+%28Computerworld+Mac+OS+News%29>

"The Best Buys, the Staples, the PC Connections, they all still have a decent Mac software business," said Stephen Baker of retail research firm NPD Group. "This will have an impact on all those guys. [The release of an OS upgrade] is always a good opportunity for them to connect to customers, get them into the store and thinking about upgrading their devices."

And with Apple pushing Lion only through its download Mac App Store, those retailers will be out of luck this time around.

The technology giant isn't branching into clothing or furniture. It is, however, expanding its presence in malls. That is a territory where department stores have long been treated better than other tenants because they attract shoppers. Often, such so-called anchor tenants pay little or no rent.

But Apple has arguably become an equally important attraction, thanks to a consistent string of blockbuster products.

Some audio equipment companies say they're feeling the pressure to add this Apple-specific feature to more of their product lines.

That comes as Apple is mulling whether it will scale back or entirely do away with the iPod-dock speakers and alarm clocks it sells in its retail stores, according to a person familiar with Apple's discussions who was not authorized to discuss the plans.

Ina Fried, All Things D

Apple confirmed to AllThingsD today that it has recalled a very small number of Verizon iPad 2 models after the products were inadvertently shipped with identical electronic serial numbers.

The numbers, officially known as mobile equipment identifiers (MEIDs), are important in the activation of devices that use Verizon's cellular network and are designed to be unique to the individual device.

The Mac Defender attack is a well thought out attack that may have taken months to get together. But staying clear of Mac Defender is really easy and doesn't require any AV software.

Nur Dianah Suhaimi & Cassandra Chew, Straits Times

Even as they expect a cut in the remuneration of political leaders to be 'inevitable', Members of Parliament are cautioning that it should not be too drastic, so as not to drive top talent away from politics.

**** Expanding The Cultural Realm In Singapore <http://travel.nytimes.com/2011/06/12/travel/singapores-cultural-realm-is-expanding.html>
Naomi Lindt, New York Times

While the government is luring international artists and architects to Singapore, local gallery owners, artists and entrepreneurs are finding innovative ways to nourish homegrown art and fashion and, at the same time, challenge the image of a buttoned-up Singapore, better known for its sparkling high-rises and mall culture than an independent arts scene.

**** Singapore May Sign Trafficking Treaty, Straits Times Reports <http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2011-06-11/singapore-may-sign-trafficking-treaty-straits-times-reports.html>

Singapore is working toward signing a United Nations treaty to prevent human trafficking, the Straits Times reported, citing an unnamed Ministry of Home Affairs spokesman.

It could have an impact on the way in which foreigners, usually young women who ply the sex trade, are dealt with by the authorities, the report said. Instead of being treated as immigration offenders and deported, they could be treated as victims and allowed to remain in shelters while their cases are investigated, it said.

**** Tin Pei Ling’s Police Case: Still No Updates From Police After 1 Month <http://www.temasekreview.com/2011/06/10/tin-pei-lings-police-case-no-updates-from-police-after-1-month/>
The Temasek Review

According to Kimberly Chan who filed the complaint against Ms Tin on 12 May, she received a letter from the police claiming that the case is still ‘under investigation.’

In contrast, then WP candidate for Aljunied GRC Dr James Gomez was arrested barely two weeks after a police report was lodged against him for ‘intimidating’ a civil servant. He was subsequently let off with a warning as there is no case against him in the first place. The police also acted immediately whenever PAP MPs filed police reports. Last year March, a 52 year old cabby was arrested for ‘threatening’ his PAP MP Lee Yi-Shyan one day after the report was lodged. In another instance, a 17 year old mentally challenged boy was arrested by the police on the same day a complaint was made against him for slamming a chair against a glass door during a PAP MP’s Meet-the-People session.

Vimita Mohandas, Channel NewsAsia

The health ministry will undertake a holistic review of the various systems and processes currently in place at nursing homes, said health minister Gan Kim Yong. This is to see if there is room for improvement and to prevent a recurrence of the recent abuse of a patient at the Nightingale Nursing Home.
