**** A Look Back At The 2011 Show <http://www.macworld.com/article/157524/2011/01/2011_expo_in_retrospect.html?lsrc=rss_main>
Dan Frakes, Macworld
In short, attendees were there to see whatâs out there thatâs not from Apple, and companies had a much better chance of standing out from the crowd than when the show floor was dominated by huge booths from Apple, Adobe, Microsoft, and the like.
**** Creating An iPhone App "From Scratch" <http://lambdadevp.blogspot.com/2010/11/creating-iphone-app-from-scratch.html>
Dev-P
This tutorial explains how to compile, build, and deploy to the Simulator an iPhone application without using Xcode or Interface Builder. I don't claim that this is the best way to go about developing without Xcode/IB, but, it works well for me.
**** App Turns iPhone Into A Smarter Camera <http://www.technologyreview.com/computing/32235/?a=f>
Kate Greene, Technology Review
A large aperture creates a shallow depth of field, so an object of interest remains crisp while the rest of the scene is blurred. The iPhone has a small aperture, meaning all parts of an image are equally in focus. SynthCam overcomes this limitation by capturing multiple scenes and combining them to make a single image.

Christopher Breen, Macworld
Last week during Macworld 2011 (formerly known as Macworld Expo) I spent a portion of my time standing in front of attendees demonstrating one thing or another on an iPad. Unlike other presentations that similarly projected images from an iPad, the images from my iPad were darned near pristine. This is the story of how I did it.

Surveying the row of door buzzers outside the hulking Brooklyn building where the artist Sue de Beer works, it somehow seems fitting to find a lone occupant listed on the buildingâs top floor, with no further explanation: âGOD.â

Emma Straub, The Paris Review
Part of me wants to touch her arm, to pull her close to me and smell her shampoo and perfume and smoky breath, but the larger part of me is content to notice, to smile, and to keep walking, knowing that Iâll think of her for the rest of the day.

**** Don't Cut Immigration ... <http://www.todayonline.com/Voices/EDC110131-0000114/Dont-cut-immigration-,,,>

To suggest that we should compete with the world on knowledge-based industries while urging a clamp-down on immigration is contradictory and unrealistic.
**** Dr M: Kuan Yew Has No Respect For Religion <http://www.themalaysianinsider.com/malaysia/article/dr-m-kuan-yew-has-no-respect-for-religion/>
Shazwan Mustafa Kamal, The Malaysian Insider
"I am not surprised by his statement because to him (Lee) religion is not important. For him the end justifies the means, so if he wants racial integration in Singapore, he wonât let Islam stand in the way of his goals. He has no respect for religion and the sensitivities of other people," Dr Mahathir said.
"The Malays over there are actually afraid of the government . . . for instance, if they are served with food that is haram (non-halal) they have to accept it. Our culture here is that if pork were served to us we would not eat it . . . but in Singapore there is a fatwa that if (pork) was served to Muslims, they cannot complain about and (they) have to accept it."

Kenny Chee, My Paper
THE views on Singapore Muslims expressed by minister mentor Lee Kuan Yew in a new book are his personal opinions, and not those of the government, prime minister Lee Hsien Loong said yesterday.

Leonaâs Blog
In our everyday interactions with our fellow Singaporeans, it is not the number of As we score or the food we can or cannot eat that breaks down social barriers â itâs the simple acts of kindness we do for each other. These then, are the hard truths that we all have to face.

Coming to democracy, because of a ârelat lahâ attitude, unlike LKYâs uptight donât-f*-around-with-father-knows-best mentality, I dare say that was what made Malaysia far more democratic in many ways than Singapore.
**** Services Sector Account For Bulk Of Employment Gains <http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/singaporebusinessnews/view/1107941/1/.html>
Mustafa Shafawi, Channel NewsAsia
The Ministry of Manpower (MOM) said the bulk of last year's employment gains came from the services sector, which added 109,500 workers, almost double the number in 2009.
The ministry said in the last quarter of 2010 alone, some 30,600 jobs were added overall, supported by hirings for the year-end festivities.

**** Public Transport Fare Review Exercise Deferred Till Q4 <http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/singaporelocalnews/view/1107968/1/.html>
S Ramesh, Channel NewsAsia
The Public Transport Council (PTC) has decided to defer this year's fare review exercise to the fourth quarter of 2011. It said this is to coincide with the opening of Phases 4 and 5 of the Circle Line from Marymount to HarbourFront.
The council said with its opening, rail fares may change for many commuters.
This has nothing to do with the presidential election and, possibly, general election being held before Q4 2011.

**** Bread-and-butter Issues Remain Top Concerns: REACH Survey <http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/singaporelocalnews/view/1107998/1/.html>
Mustafa Shafawi, Channel NewsAsia
The survey found that Singaporeans are least satisfied with "Keeping the cost of living affordable" (34%). They also display lower levels of satisfaction in the affordability of housing, adequacy of retirement savings (53%) and affordability of healthcare (55%).
They are less happy with the provision of job opportunities for older workers and retrenched workers (46% and 57% respectively) and with transport issues, particularly the Electronic Road Pricing (ERP) system (55%) and provision of affordable public transport (63%).
**** Singapore Cracks Down On Online Journalism <http://www.asiasentinel.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=2955&Itemid=181>
Asia Sentinel
"Discussing politics does not make a publication a political organization," said Bob Dietz, the organization's Asia program coordinator. "Forcing The Online Citizen to register as a political association distorts its role and threatens its ability to cover politics. Prime minister Lee Hsien Loong is clearly trying to tighten control of media outlets before calling elections."
**** Three New ERP Gantries From Feb 21 <http://www.straitstimes.com/BreakingNews/Singapore/Story/STIStory_630381.html>
Royston Sim, Straits Times
There will be three new gantries in operation from that day, as the Land Transport Authority (LTA) adjusts the ERP cordon to include the Marina Bay Financial Centre as part of the larger Central Business District.
**** S'pore Consumer Confidence Dips In Q4 2010 <http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/singaporebusinessnews/view/1108022/1/.html>
Chris Howells, Channel NewsAsia
This was the first quarter-on-quarter decline since the first quarter of 2009 and the index remains below the 114 recorded in the third quarter of 2007.
The Nielsen Company Singapore managing director Joan Koh said: "Despite a four percentage point dip in the consumer confidence index, an index of 109 is still a positive one as Singapore managed to hold its own and stay minimally unaffected by the uncertainties we have seen in the other parts of the world.
**** He Ain't Heavy, He's Your Father <http://singaporedesk.blogspot.com/2011/01/he-aint-heavy-hes-your-father.html>
Singapore Notes
Would the 3 young Singaporeans mentioned earlier have been left off the hook if they used the "personal opinions" defence? Can Alan Shadrake, who published some stuff about the judicial system, also avail himself of the "personal opinions" defence? Are we to understand that all government policies are also subjects of "personal opinions"? That's a very slippery road he has chosen to navigate - but at least we now know what we are voting for.
**** What Integration? <http://www.kampungnet.com.sg/node/87>
Rahmansaid, KampungNet
So, spare me this diatribe of Muslims not integrating. Weâve been doing it since God knows when.
The only people on both sides of the exchange (LKY included) are those with an axe to grind.
