**** Kindle App Gets Side-loading, Background Downloading <http://www.macworld.com/article/157066/2011/01/kindle_app.html?lsrc=rss_main>
David Dahlquist, Macworld

Perhaps the most notable addition in the update is the support for side-loading of content into the Kindle app. You can now add compatible files into the Kindle library from Mail attachments or other apps that support the iOS feature that allows you to open files in other apps. In addition, you can now drag compatible files to the Kindle app via iTunes, when your iOS device is connected to a Mac or PC, by clicking on the Apps tab, scrolling down to the list of apps with file-transfer support, clicking on the Kindle app, and then dragging files into the window to the right.

**** Interactive Fiction In The Ebook Era <http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/gamesblog/2011/jan/11/interactive-fiction-ebooks-apple-kindle?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+theguardian%2Fbooks%2Frss+%28Books%29>
Keith Stuart, The Guardian

For now, it's just fun to re-discover the concept of interactive novels; their limitations and quirks, their conventions and narrative tactics. There's just one problem – very few of the above apps allow you to re-trace your route through the pages or to re-roll the dice. Like the computer game versions of family favourites such as Monopoly and Scrabble, this represents the removal of tactile, emergent player activities, it is the prescriptive victory of the ruleset over the player. In other words, it means I can't cheat.

**** AT&T And Verizon iPhone Plans Compared <http://www.macworld.com/article/157071/2011/01/compare_verizon_att_plans.html?lsrc=rss_main>
David Chartier, Macworld

The minimum cost for both Verizon and AT&T with data and SMS plans is almost exactly the same, with a total individual plan price of $60 on both networks (again, this is assuming Verizon's current data plan offerings—that price is subject to change). Things get more interesting once you get into the family plans, as Verizon offers more minutes than AT&T, but charges $10 to $20 more, depending on the voice package.

**** The Afterlife Of David Foster Wallace <http://chronicle.com/article/The-Afterlife-of-David-Foster/125823/>
Jennifer Howard, Chronicle Of Higher Education

Readers outside academe caught on to Wallace before scholars did. When he died, academic interest in him had only begun to show real signs of life, with scholars starting to look closely at the ways in which Wallace responded to and reshaped for a new generation the postmodernism practiced by writers like Don DeLillo and Thomas Pynchon. Two years later, spurred in part by his death but even more by a rising generation of young scholars, the impending publication of a posthumous novel, and the opening of a major archive of the writer's papers, David Foster Wallace studies is on its way to becoming a robust scholarly enterprise.

For now, Drs. Maury and Sicardy decline to say exactly how small Eris is, because they first want to publish the results in the journal Nature. But they say that even accounting for the uncertainties in the observations, the largest possible Eris is smaller than the smallest possible Pluto.

The news raises the question of what might have happened if Eris’ true size had been known from the beginning. Dr. Brown’s discovery of Eris — and the presumption that it was bigger than Pluto — was the falling domino that pushed the International Astronomical Union to come up with a new definition of “planet” that excluded Pluto. Pluto and Eris were downsized to “dwarf planets” — roundish objects that do not gravitationally dominate their orbits.

Over the past 3 years, the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) rejected an average of about 2% of the REP applications processed each year. Some of the reasons for rejection include their prolonged absence from Singapore, their lack of gainful employment at the time of REP renewal, the lack of family roots in Singapore or in the case of dependent PRs, the loss of PR status of the sponsor.

But he added that where necessary, the government will block some pornographic and other undesirable sites, especially those that are more prominent.

We believe that the enhanced penalties is one of the reasons why the number of cases have dropped. In the context of young offenders, I should add that we had amended the Moneylenders Act to specify as an offence any person of or above the age of 21 years causing or procuring a youth under the age of 16 years to commit unlicenced moneylending or acts of harassment. The early signs indicate that the amendments have helped in dealing with the loansharking and harassment situation. We will continue to monitor the loansharking situation and not let up in our efforts in tackling this scourge.

**** MND Explains Delay In Approving Pasir Ris Wet Market <http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/singaporelocalnews/view/1104020/1/.html>
Hoe Yeen Nie, Channel NewsAsia

The National Development Ministry has said there was a delay in approving a wet market in Pasir Ris because proposals submitted by the operator, Sheng Siong, were unacceptable.

Senior minister of state for national development, Grace Fu, said: "Until recently, Sheng Siong repeatedly submitted proposals which included supermarket features, suggesting that they were trying to operate White Sands as a supermarket. HDB had no choice but to reject these proposals as they were not in accordance with Sheng Siong's commitment and did not meet the conditions for a wet market."

**** No Time For Tame Lions: The State Vs TOC <http://dlzj.wordpress.com/2011/01/11/no-time-for-tame-lions-the-state-vs-toc/>
Icarus Flew Too High

The sudden multi-pronged attack is nothing more than an infringement of the freedom of expression and association of these dedicated individuals in Singapore, and it is fair to say that Singapore is becoming more closed than open. Whether the members of TOC choose to register their organisation or not, a forced request is nothing more than a strong and desperate state to start clamping down on individuals organising themselves for political change, a clear violation of our constitutional and human rights and a spat in the faces of all Singaporeans.
