**** Devices Not Loading Properly At Boot In OS X <http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-20027230-263.html>
Topher Kessler, CNET
There may be instances in OS X where devices that require a third-party driver (such as input devices and cameras) will not properly load at bootup. While a device may load when attached to the system after bootup, it may not be recognized properly when attached at during startup. When this happens, it is usually a problem either with the system's boot caches, or a problem with the developer's configuration of the driver being used for the device.
**** Apple Developers Cautiously Eye Mac App Store <http://voices.washingtonpost.com/fasterforward/2011/01/apple_developers_cautiously_ey.html>
Rob Pegoraro, Washington Post
Does that represent a fair deal for Mac developers? I've been discussing the App Store with four of them.
**** Japan Pushes For Content Control Software On iPhone <http://www.macnn.com/articles/11/01/04/device.lacks.filtering.software.says.govt/>
MacNN
The Japanese government is criticizing Apple Japan and cellular carrier Softbank for a lack of content filtering on the iPhone, reports say. Specifically, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications is expected to ask for region-tailored filtering software to be installed as soon as possible. Local stores are obligated to install censorship tools on phones sold to minors.
**** Winterâs Philosophers <http://www.nybooks.com/blogs/nyrblog/2011/jan/04/winter-philosophers/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+nybooks+%28The+New+York+Review+of+Books%29>
Charles Simic, New York Review Of Books
âEveryone who thinks is unhappy,â says Sergei Dovlatov in one of his stories. Some crows caw all day, some have nothing to say. I see one of them pace back and forth on my lawn the way Iâve seen Hamlet do on stage. Whatever is bothering him seems insoluble, too much for one crow to figure out on his own. Still, no harm trying, I suppose, even with the racket his relatives are making as they fly to and fro, as if the road they oversee is not covered only with fallen leaves and patches of ice, but also with fresh road kill.
**** More Schools Embracing iPad As Learning Tool <http://www.nytimes.com/2011/01/05/education/05tablets.html>
Winnie Hu, New York Times
A growing number of schools across the nation are embracing the iPad as the latest tool to teach Kafka in multimedia, history through âJeopardyâ-like games and math with step-by-step animation of complex problems.
**** Documents To Go® Premium - Office Suite Review <http://www.macworld.com/appguide/app.html?id=113066&lsrc=rss_main>
Jeff Merron, Macworld
Editing any complex document, or even doing something as simple as selecting a spreadsheet cell, is often a challenge on the iPhoneâs small screen. However, Documents to Go Premium seems to make the best of the iPhoneâs limitations. DataViz seems to not yet really understand that the iPad is a different beast, and that a different interface isnât only possible but also, in many ways, preferable.
**** Magazines On The iPad: Separating Fact From Fiction <http://www.thomas-fitzgerald.net/2011/01/05/magazines-on-the-ipad-separating-fact-from-fiction/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+ThomasFitzgeraldnet+%28thomas+fitzgerald.net%29>
Thomas Fitzgerald
Going forward, I suspect Apple probably will dedicate an area of the iTunes store to magazines, and they probably will make it easier for publications to include subscriptions directly in the App through the app store payment system. But for now, donât believe everything you read regarding what âcanâtâ be done because most of it already is.
**** Location-aware Neer App Shows Loved Ones Where You Are <http://www.macworld.com/article/156869/2011/01/neer.html?lsrc=rss_main>
Sam Felsing, Macworld
Neer taps into to your phoneâs GPS features which can be a drain on battery life. Qualcomm, however, claims that it has designed the app with power efficiency in mindâthe developerâs goal is to give users one full day of battery life when they run Neer. And Qualcomm says itâs working to improve the appâs effect on battery life in future versions.

**** The Now-You-See-It Restaurant <http://www.nytimes.com/2011/01/05/dining/05temp.html?_r=1&ref=dining>
Frank Bruni, New York Times
For his follow-up to Dovetail, an elegant success on the Upper West Side, Mr. Fraser has chosen a project with a death foretold. He signed a short-term lease for a space in SoHo whose landlord cannot promise that the building, likely to be demolished, will be around past July. In return he received a rent of about $9,000 a month, well below market rate.
He was also freed from many of the little and big concerns that can turn the opening of a restaurant into such a protracted odyssey and the running of it into such an expensive one.
**** The Elements Of Clunk <http://chronicle.com/article/The-Elements-of-Clunk/125757/>
Ben Yagoda, The Chronicle Of Higher Education
Punctuation is a train wreck among my students. I have no doubt as to the root of the problem: Students haven't spent much time reading. Punctuation, including the use of apostrophes and hyphens, is governed by a fairly complicated series of rules and conventions, learned for the most part not in the classroom but by encountering and subliminally absorbing them again and again. Students have a lot of conversations and texting sessions, but that's no help. You need to read a lot of edited and published prose.

**** Wrong To Equate Gender Inequality With National Service <http://www.straitstimes.com/STForum/Story/STIStory_620598.html>
Edmond Lo, Straits Times
Excluding women from national service is hardly a security threat. The literal gender equality that Mr Lur advocates is limiting, questionable and un-feminist.
**** It Is Not About Politics At Boon Lay Youth Club At All <http://www.todayonline.com/Voices/EDC110105-0000204/It-is-not-about-politics-at-Boon-Lay-Youth-Club-at-all>
Tan Ah Teck, Today
As I watched how my "little" girl grew up into a more mature and tolerant young lady during her time in BLYC, I cannot help but beg to differ with Mr Siew.
She was never involved in any political parties, neither was she invited to join one.
**** PAP MPs âConcernedâ At Widening Income Gap In Singapore <http://www.temasekreview.com/2011/01/05/pap-mps-concerned-at-widening-income-gap-in-singapore/>
Temasek Review
It is strange that PAP MPs who have been âsleepingâ on their job for the last four years suddenly become âalertedâ to Singaporeâs widening income gap which was described as being âinevitableâ by their âoverlordâ Lee Kuan Yew as recently as October 2009.

Singapore Democrat Party
Given the situation in Singapore there is no reason why we cannot employ more efficient training methods and reduce full-time NS from the present two years to twelve months or less.
It must be remembered that the Enlistment Act was enacted for a specific purpose and any detraction from that purpose must be rejected.

Leong Sze Hian, The Online Citizen
The supply side of land and HDB flats may in a way be working against the cooling measures.
Against the above backdrop of housing supply and demand issues, Singaporeansâ problems may also be exacerbated by two years of declining real wages in 2008 and 2009, and possibly a third consecutive one in 2010, and increasing cost of living with inflation at a high of 3.8 per cent â the highest since January 2009.

**** Indonesia To Provide Clean Water To Singapore <http://www.tempointeractive.com/hg/nasional/2011/01/05/brk,20110105-303940,uk.html>
TEMPO
Indonesia will provide clean water and energy to Singapore. The city-state is expected to experience a water shortage by 2015. The clean water supply will be sent from Batam, Bintan and Karimun (BBK) due to its close location to Singapore.
**** *Thy Neighbor* <http://hyelbaine.blogspot.com/2011/01/thy-neighbor.html>
Baine's World
Some of us Malaysians tend to look to our neighbors down south as a near perfect place to earn a living in. One hardly hears any bad things written about Singapore donât you think? They have a good public transport infrastructure and although we keep punting jokes about chewing gums, its a cleaner city than KL none the less.
Then again, thereâs always 2 sides to a coin.
