Josh Wright, Macgasm

Apple has finally confirmed the grand opening date of its highly hyped retail store in Grand Central Station in NYC. The confirmation comes by way of a message displayed on the now famous flip style ticker display out front of the new location.

**** Mophie, Best Buy Recalls Overheating Cases <http://www.tuaw.com/2011/12/01/mophie-best-buy-recalls-overheating-cases/>
Megan Lavey-Heaton, TUAW

Mophie is recalling the Juice Pack Air for the fourth-generation iPod touch. Affected models will have the first five digits of the serial number be between TR113 and TR120. Mophie said a small number of those units might overheat, causing the plastic to deform and damage the iPod touch.

**** Apple: Carrier IQ Still On iPhone 4, But We Don't Read Your E-mail And Texts <http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/news/2011/12/apple-carrier-iq-still-on-iphone-4-but-we-dont-read-your-e-mail-and-texts.ars?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=rss>
Jon Brodkin, Ars Technica

In response to our question, Apple tells us there is only one device running iOS 5 that still runs Carrier IQ, and it's the iPhone 4. Other devices running iOS 5, such as the iPad, the new iPhone 4S, and older iPhone models updated to iOS 5 have had Carrier IQ stripped out. But Apple says it has never used Carrier IQ to record keystrokes or personal messages.

**** iPhone Battery Life Issues May Continue To Vex Users—even Post iOS 5.1 <http://arstechnica.com/apple/news/2011/12/battery-life-woes-continue-to-plague-iphone-4s-users.ars?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=rss>
Chris Foresman, Ars Technica

Tweaking iOS 5 and its power management software is the likely fix, but with so many areas of the operating system to examine, it may take Apple more time to iron out the problem that it had originally intended.

John Schwartz, New York Times

The truth, it seems, is that the way we read, and our reasons for loving or disliking audiobooks, are deeply personal. They are expressions of self, so tied to who we are. If you belittle the way I read, you’re belittling me.

**** The Rot And Hope <http://desparatebeep.blogspot.com/2011/12/rot-and-hope.html>
Tang Li, Desparatebeep

Seriously, there's something so rotten in Singapore and with Singaporeans that it's gone beyond the state of funny. How can we as a society tolerate and accept this as being part of our natural landscape?

**** Do Away With Variable Bonuses In Ministerial Salaries <http://www.yoursdp.org/index.php/news/singapore/5062-do-away-with-variable-bonuses-in-ministerial-salaries>
Singapore Democratic Party

There is a misconception that the GDP measures how rich Singaporeans are and that an increase in the GDP in any one year indicates that Singaporeans are better off. This is completely false.

All the GDP measures is the amount of economic activity that took place in the year. Not all this activity is healthy for society or benefits the population equally. For example a company that pays handsome bonuses to its directors while dishing out painful retrenchment benefits to its workers is increasing the GDP in both exercises.

**** Rainy-day Menace At Some Circle Line Stations <http://www.todayonline.com/Voices/EDC111202-0000091/Rainy-day-menace-at-some-Circle-Line-stations>
Desmond Lim, Today

It is amazing that the new Circle Line seems to have leaking problems not only in a downpour but even when it is not raining.

**** Make Non-smokers' Homes Truly Smoke-free <http://www.todayonline.com/Voices/EDC111202-0000049/Make-non-smokers-homes-truly-smoke-free>
Liu I-Chun, Today

While there have been calls for more tolerance, telling people to tolerate their neighbours' toxic cigarette smoke is like asking wives to "tolerate" daily physical abuse from their husbands.

**** Preserving Singapore’s ‘Green Spine’ <http://blogs.wsj.com/searealtime/2011/12/02/preserving-singapores-green-spine/?mod=google_news_blog>
Shibani Mahtani, Wall Street Journal

The fate of Singapore’s green corridor, though, remains uncertain. Although Singapore’s government has agreed to preserve at least some of the area — which runs nearly the entire western length of the island — it hasn’t ruled out letting developers carve up some. That has left environmental groups mobilizing in the hopes of protecting the corridor before development swallows it up.

A final decision isn’t expected until the government reveals its next master plan in 2013, which means the next year will likely be one of close work between environmentalists and the government to save what they can — just like the New York High Line, which required a full-court press by activists to ensure it wasn’t scrapped in the name of progress.

**** Consolation Prize For Corruption <http://singaporedesk.blogspot.com/2011/12/consolation-prize-for-corruption.html>
Singapore Notes

It would appear that the vaunted aspiration for attaining the Swiss standard of living was never about striving for the European benchmark of moral society, just the monetary hallmark. Hence the consoling pat on the back: Singapore remains the least corrupt in Asia, ahead of Hong Kong and Japan.

**** Severe Limitations On Freedom Of Speech And Freedom Of Assembly: WJP Report <http://theonlinecitizen.com/2011/12/severe-limitations-on-freedom-of-speech-and-freedom-of-assembly-wjp-report/>

**** How Educational Is Unnatural Dolphin Behaviour? <http://www.todayonline.com/Voices/EDC111202-0000173/How-educational-is-unnatural-dolphin-behaviour?>
Audrey Tan Ruiping, Today

RWS is sending a wrong message about conservation. Bottlenose dolphins are not in danger of extinction, so why do they have to be "conserved"?

A true conservation message should inform people about what they can do in their capacity to conserve marine life and not by keeping dolphins in enclosures that are only a fraction of the space they are used to.
