AppleInsider

Customers who buy an iPhone 4 after Sept. 30 will not be able to request a free case through Apple's "Case Program," but they will be able to contact AppleCare to request a free Bumper.

**** Feature: Ars Reviews The 6th-generation iPod Nano: All Screen, All The Time <http://feeds.arstechnica.com/~r/arstechnica/apple/~3/hgRBCSzawbk/6th-generation-ipod-nano.ars>
Jacqui Cheng, Ars Technica

We'll just come out and say it: the sixth-generation iPod nano feels very un-nano-like. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but it definitely feels and "acts" more like a shuffle, but with a screen. The size and built-in clip definitely help this perception, but the general limitations of the device (no more video, largely focused around audio-only) make it more like the shuffle than ever before.

**** Apple Starts Evicting App Store Name Squatters <http://techcrunch.com/2010/09/10/app-store-name-squatters/>
MG Siegler, TechCrunch

Apple has begun emailing developers if they’ve failed to upload their binary for 90 days after first starting the app creation process. Apple warns the developer that they have another 30 days to do so, or the record will be deleted from iTunes Connect. And the key point: “The app name will then be available for another developer to use.”

**** The Shallows: How The Internet Is Changing The Way We Think, Read And Remember By Nicholas Carr <http://feeds.guardian.co.uk/~r/theguardian/books/rss/~3/B4zIYCE_Tb4/shallows-internet-changing-way-think>
Steven Poole, The Guardian

Do you find it hard to concentrate these days? Do you get fidgety after two pages of a book, and look around for something else to do? Is the online abbreviation "tl;dr" (too long; didn't read) your response to basically everything? If so, Nicholas Carr feels your pain, and has diagnosed the cause: using the internet has rewired your brain and turned you into a flibbertigibbet.

There are many stories Tom McCarthy chooses not to tell in “C,” his tour de force new novel encompassing the short life of one Serge Carrefax, born at the turn of the 20th century on a rural English estate.

**** Networking <http://feeds.nytimes.com/click.phdo?i=b708d7e934160985fb614e0c0dcfe7a5>
Scarlett Thomas, New York Times

In a late-capitalist marketplace where you can buy or sell almost anything, including artificial islands in Dubai (Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt apparently bought one in the shape of Ethiopia), nothing feels impossible. And in a world where fiction is becoming indistinguishable from reality, as the philosopher Baudrillard suggested, the flow of “truth” goes both ways. It’s just as likely that fiction will come true as it is that the truth will turn out to have been fiction all along.

**** Days Of Reflection For The Man Who Defined Singapore <http://www.nytimes.com/2010/09/11/world/asia/11lee.html?partner=rssnyt&emc=rss>
Seth Mydans, New York Times

“So, when is the last leaf falling?” asked Lee Kuan Yew, the man who made Singapore in his own stern and unsentimental image, nearing his 87th birthday and contemplating age, infirmity and loss.

“I can feel the gradual decline of energy and vitality,” said Mr. Lee, whose “Singapore model” of economic growth and tight social control made him one of the most influential political figures of Asia. “And I mean generally, every year, when you know you are not on the same level as last year. But that’s life.”

**** Kayakers Not Banned From Reservoirs <http://www.straitstimes.com/STForum/Story/STIStory_577228.html>
Tan Nguan Sen, PUB, Straits Times

PUB has worked with partners such as the Singapore Canoe Federation and People's Association to open kayaking centres at Bedok Reservoir, MacRitchie Reservoir, Jurong Lake and Lower Seletar Reservoir. Members of the public can also try their hand at sailing at Marina Barrage.

**** Raise Levy, Not Stop Free Buses <http://www.todayonline.com/Voices/EDC100911-0000057/Raise-levy,-not-stop-free-buses>
Quek Soo Beng, Raymund Koh Joo Guan, Today

Aren't the IRs multiple-service destinations? So why the hang-up about Singaporeans enjoying the free shuttle bus services?

Why then deprive the non-gambling majority of the transport privileges just because some think it is politically correct to "appease" public opinion? But who exactly is the prohibition of shuttle bus services appeasing? Surely not the IR customers or people enjoying the free rides to and from the city.

<http://www.zaobao.com/yl/yl100911_002.shtml>

**** MOM Official: Not True That All 80,000 Foreign Workers Take Up Jobs Shunned By Singaporeans <http://www.temasekreview.com/2010/09/11/mom-official-not-true-that-all-80000-foreign-workers-take-up-jobs-shunned-by-singaporeans/>
The Temasek Review

A reader who worked at the MOM told us that the reality on the ground is quite different from what is portrayed in the media.

According to him, about half the work permits and employment passes are given to foreign workers in the construction and shipping industries while the rest are granted to those who are competing directly with Singaporeans for jobs which can otherwise be taken up by them.

**** Of Singapore And Freedom <http://ritabea.blogspot.com/2010/09/of-singapore-and-freedom.html>
Dealings with Shadows

Without freedom, “success” means nothing. Sure you can feel safe in your bed at night, but you will never be fulfilled in your soul. Without freedom, people cannot choose right, and therefore cannot sustain it being forced upon them (if what was forced was even right to be begin with).
