**** Apple iPad Gets Off To Flying Start Here <http://www.koreatimes.co.kr/www/news/tech/2010/11/129_76621.html>
Kim Tong-hyung, Korea Times

The competition between KT and SK Telecom in tablets accounts for the second-round of the proxy war between Apple and Samsung here.

KT selling more than 1 million iPhones here was a crushing blow to the ego of Samsung, which never before saw its local handset dominance challenged, and the Korean technology giant appears fired-up to prove that whatever Apple can do, it can do better.

**** Apple iPad Isn't Just For Work; Check Out Games That Are Making Way To Tablet <http://www.nydailynews.com/entertainment/2010/11/21/2010-11-21_apple_ipad_isnt_just_for_work_check_out_games_that_are_making_way_to_tablet.html?r=entertainment>
Ebenezer Samuel, New York Daily News

Developers are still learning how to best utilize the gigantic touchscreen interface, but more and more often, we're seeing iPad-specific gems pop up in the iTunes Apps Store. The best part? Unlike consoles, most of the games come at comparable budget prices, while still offering plenty of fun.

**** Chinese Government Takes A Bite Out Of Apple <http://www.siliconvalley.com/ci_16650413>
John Boudreau, San Jose Mercury News

Like other western Internet companies, Apple, if it wants to operate in China, has to follow the rules of the Communist government, which does not want its citizens accessing politically sensitive information.

**** Apple Is Learning To Speak Chinese <http://www.siliconvalley.com/companies/ci_16652234?nclick_check=1>
John Boudreau, San Jose Mercury News

The China App Store offers few applications created by independent developers specifically for Chinese, said Bo Wang, CEO of Bokan Technologies, one of the largest iPhone app developers in China. "Two-thirds of our downloads come from the United States. The rest are from Europe and Japan. In terms of the Chinese market, it's almost zero," he said.

Apple may have trouble persuading top Chinese developers to make iPhone apps specific to the country, Wang said, because of China's copycat culture. Most of them prefer to work for major companies, such as Tencent QQ, the popular portal and instant messaging service, that offer good salaries to engineers who know Apple's iOS mobile platform, he said. Independent developers can make money off services provided through apps but not necessarily from the sales of apps, which can be copied, Wang added.

**** Book Review: 'Sunset Park' By Paul Auster <http://www.latimes.com/features/books/la-ca-paul-auster-20101121,0,4444997.story?track=rss&utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+features%2Fbooks+%28Los+Angeles+Times+-+Books%29>
David L. Ulin, Los Angeles Times

The novel suffers from an excess of analysis, especially the essay-like accounts of the fatwa against Salman Rushdie and PEN American Center's efforts on behalf of human rights. Still, Auster keeps coming back to "the pull of the stories, always the stories, the thousands of stories, the millions of stories, and yet one never tires of them" — although, of course, they are never enough. This makes "Sunset Park" a novel that finishes as open-endedly as it begins. Chancy territory, as Renzo puts it, but ultimately, what other choice do we have?

Sharon Begley, Wired

Here’s the weird thing about breasts: They are a point of obsession, vulnerable to the mercurial whims of mass culture. But one thing remains constant: In every era, a whole lot of women are convinced they have the wrong kind.

The King James Bible turns 400 next year, and even in multicultural, secular modern Britain its influence is still profound.

Peter Preston, Guardian

Tony Judt never thought his dying memoir would be published. In fact it is a book to treasure.

**** Thanks For Asking <http://www.boston.com/bostonglobe/ideas/articles/2010/11/21/thanks_for_asking/>
Jan Freeman, Boston Globe

“Where do you get your ideas?” people often ask. And for years, I’ve answered, truthfully, “Mostly from readers.” It’s great to have that constant feedback. But here’s the best part: The most routine-looking questions, on the most familiar usage issues, can lead us down the rabbit hole to a land of language surprises.

**** Romantic Rabble V Coy Court <http://yawningbread.wordpress.com/2010/11/21/romantic-rabble-v-coy-court/>
Yawning Bread

In short, it is this: I agree that Section 377A is bad law and should go. I agree it has all the prejudicial and discriminatory effects as enumerated in the media release. Call a forum and you might rouse several more to agree. Without doubt, it’s all very romantic, but it won’t substitute for the careful assembly of a legal case. That takes punctilious preparation and attention to detail, not sweeping statements that are confoundingly wrong. Charging madly like the Light Brigade towards cowering judges does not a good case make.

**** Measures To Discourage Medical Students From Leaving For S’pore <http://thestar.com.my/news/story.asp?file=/2010/11/21/nation/7473357&sec=nation>

“We don’t want our universities to be the training ground for medical officers for Singapore,” Health minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai told reporters after launching the Sultanah Fatimah Specialist Hospital new CT scan unit yesterday.

He said the Government had announced a new system where all specialists needed to serve only nine years before they could be promoted to the U54 salary scale.

Despite the tiny nominal sum charged, the presence of Singaporean soldiers has benefited the Australians financially, Rockhampton mayor Brad Carter said. 'It's part of our economic diversification strategy to have military training in this region,' he said. 'It brings dollars into our economy.'

While the state has to roll out national social safety net programmes on a "race-blind" basis, ethnic-based groups help address issues specific to the different communities, Mr Lee told the annual Community Leaders' Forum for the Malay-Muslim community.
