Xavier Lanier, Gotta Be Mobile

If I brought all four of these devices I would be able to do approximately 14 hours of work (web, writing and light photo editing), watch 10+ hours of movies on my iPad and talk for about seven hours on the iPhone. That should pretty much cover me on any trip of any kind.

**** Collette Waller: 'Without MS, There Wouldn't Be All These Poems' <http://www.guardian.co.uk/books/2010/nov/17/collette-waller-ms-poems-multiple-sclerosis?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+theguardian%2Fbooks%2Frss+%28Books%29>
Jon Henley, Guardian

Collette Waller can't read her poems out loud any more. In fact, there are lots of things she can't do any more. She can't walk, can't talk, can't swallow. She is confined to her bed and her wheelchair, and fed through a tube in her stomach.

She can still smile though, grin even, and turn a pair of still-bright eyes on you and make a noise – an exaggerated exhalation, a sort of throat snort – that is, quite plainly, a laugh. She does this often. Even pale, puffy, unable (literally) to move a muscle, a cloth under her chin to catch the dribbles, she's a force of nature.

Julie Bosman, New York Times

Walking down Madison Avenue on a sunny afternoon last week Steve Martin had the look of a movie star in thin disguise, wearing tinted glasses and a charcoal fedora that covered his familiar white head of hair.

But once inside the Gagosian Gallery, one of the most high-powered galleries in New York, he peeled off his coat, revealing a dark suit, burgundy tie and perfectly polished black shoes that made him look more like one of the art dealers he describes in his new novel.

Maybe our inner world of dreams and imagination offers not merely escape, but our best way of finding truth in the confusing fictional landscape of modern reality.

**** Where There's A Will, Let's Proceed Cautiously <http://www.straitstimes.com/STForum/Story/STIStory_604427.html>
Seah Kian Peng, Workgroup For The Maintenance Of Parents (Amendment) Bill, Singapore Government

As Prof Lee states rightly, the scope of the MPA is limited to matters pertaining to a parent's maintenance. The effect of a maintenance order ceases upon a payer's death. In the unfortunate event where a child dies before his parents, it may be more appropriate for existing legislation, namely the Inheritance (Family Provision) Act, to handle cases where wills have been made.

**** Why Parents Think PSLE Is Critical <http://www.straitstimes.com/STForum/Story/STIStory_604418.html>
Shalaka Nanda Kumar, Straits Times

While the PSLE may have its merits, it is obvious that it is an examination that discriminates against late bloomers. It is unfair to place such an extreme burden on 12-year-old children who may not understand the gravity of the PSLE's implications.

**** Another Sad Day For Freedom Of Speech In Singapore <http://yoursdp.org/index.php/news/singapore/4352-another-sad-day-for-freedom-of-speech-in-singapore>
Singapore Democrat Party

It doesn't take much to understand that if the PAP can banish free speech from this island, it controls the political narrative of this country thereby perpetuates its political dominance.

The PAP have us by the throat. The danger now is whether we are too deep to extricate ourselves from this situation. Did we make a Faustian pact by sacrificing our political rights for economic progress?

**** Joint Statement By Singapore Anti-death Penalty Campaign (Sadpc) And Think Centre On The Alan Shadrake’s Case <http://rachelzeng.wordpress.com/2010/11/17/joint-statement-by-singapore-anti-death-penalty-campaign-sadpc-and-think-centre-on-the-alan-shadrakes-case/>
Sinapan Samydorai, Think Centre, Rachel Zeng, Singapore Anti-Death Penalty Campaign

The judgement had failed to consider that the book dealt with serious topics such as the death penalty as administrated by the Singapore justice system, no casual reader would or should read it with an uncritical mind as one would with a book of fiction.

The persecution of Mr Shadrake, a freelance journalist, confirms once again that freedom of expression in Singapore remains repressed. The freedom to express one’s thoughts and criticisms should be respected and the freedom to gain access to and share alternative opinions should also be allowed.

**** Singapore Under ‘Siege’ <http://www.freemalaysiatoday.com/fmt-english/opinion/comment/12962-singapore-under-siege>
Maxwell Coopers, Free Malaysia Today

Though it is too early to say advocates and concerned citizens are calling for a return to the tough policing actions of yesteryears through preventive detention and detentions without trial – the very kind of enforcement serving the bane of human rights activists.

Another is for the reinstatement of the discarded practice of getting offenders to register at police stations weekly.

**** Singapore Says Economy To Expand 4% To 6% In 2011 <http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2010-11-18/singapore-forecasts-economy-to-grow-4-to-6-in-2011-extending-expansion.html>
Shamim Adam And Andrea Tan, Bloomberg

Singapore said its economy will next year extend an expansion that has already prompted the central bank to allow the currency to rise to a record to damp inflationary pressures.

Singapore’s economy is in the running to be the world’s fastest-growing this year after a record first-half expansion. Inflation is accelerating even after the central bank said in October it will allow faster currency gains, breaking from Thailand and Malaysia where policy makers have refrained from tightening policy this quarter as global growth slows.

**** MFA Spokesman's Comments In Response To Media Queries On UK Foreign Office Minister Jeremy Browne's Comment On The Sentencing Of British Author Alan Shadrake <http://app.mfa.gov.sg/2006/press/view_press_email.asp?post_id=6547>
Ministry Of Foreign Affairs, Singapore Government

In response to media queries on UK Foreign Office Minister Jeremy Browne's comment on the sentencing of British author Alan Shadrake, the MFA Spokesman said that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is surprised that a British Minister has commented on the matter, which is not about freedom of expression or Singapore-UK relations, but about the integrity of Singapore's judicial system. The British Government should understand that Singapore has the right to enforce its own laws to protect the reputation of our judiciary and judicial system, as well as other key public institutions. Like the UK, Singapore attaches great importance to our bilateral relations and we look forward to Mr Browne's introductory visit to Singapore in December.
