**** Apple Responds To FutureTap Regarding Ripped-Off App UI Appearing In Patent Application <http://www.futuretap.com/blog/patentgate-apple-responded/>
Ortwin Gentz, The FutureBlog

So the use of the Where To? screenshot is not an offense in any way but merely an illustration that apps such as Where To? could make use of the invention. We feel honored over this mention and appreciate that Apple is looking into a proper attribution of the screenshot. In retrospective, I can say we wouldn‘t ever have considered the story alarming had the screenshot included a short attribution notice.

While Wall Street analysts have turned bearish on PC and chip demand, they're still bullish on forecasts for Apple's iPad. Does this tell us something about the future of the PC industry?

Charlie Sorrel, Wired

Camera+, the iPhone camera app of choice for many people, has snuck a rather handy feature into the latest version, 1.2.1. You’d better grab it while you can, as it uses a hack to add back in a feature that Apple rejected.

Schools were quick to realize the cost savings made possible by replacing books with iPads. It appears that government agencies may also be able to see similar cost savings.

**** iHelp For Autism <http://www.sfweekly.com/2010-08-11/news/ihelp-for-autism/>
Ashley Harrell, SF Weekly

Since the iPad's unveiling in April, autism experts and parents have brought it into countless homes and classrooms around the world. Developers have begun pumping out applications specifically designed for users with special needs, and initial studies are already measuring the effectiveness of the iPod Touch and the iPad as learning tools for children with autism. Through the devices, some of these children have been able to communicate their thoughts to adults for the first time. Others have learned life skills that had eluded them for years.

Though there are other computers designed for children with autism, a growing number of experts say that the iPad is better. It's cheaper, faster, more versatile, more user-friendly, more portable, more engaging, and infinitely cooler for young people.

Jeffrey Mincey, Mac 360

Barely a month into Safari 5 and official Safari Browser Extensions, there is a growing list of extensions (as expected) and a relative dearth of extensions with usefulness beyond interesting. Also, I’ve noticed that after installing a dozen extensions Safari begins to drag in performance.

Tom Simonite, Technology Review

The recent furor over the iPhone 4's antenna has made consumers aware of the constraints designers face when trying to build sleek, compact gadgets that also get a good connection. Researchers at Rice University have come up with a design that could make signal worries a thing of the past, and extend battery life as well. The design uses two antennas that focus their power in different directions.

**** The Point Of No Return <http://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/1969/12/the-point-of-no-return/8186/>
Jeffrey Goldberg, The Atlantic

It is possible that at some point in the next 12 months, the imposition of devastating economic sanctions on the Islamic Republic of Iran will persuade its leaders to cease their pursuit of nuclear weapons. It is also possible that Iran’s reform-minded Green Movement will somehow replace the mullah-led regime, or at least discover the means to temper the regime’s ideological extremism. It is possible, as well, that “foiling operations” conducted by the intelligence agencies of Israel, the United States, Great Britain, and other Western powers—programs designed to subvert the Iranian nuclear effort through sabotage and, on occasion, the carefully engineered disappearances of nuclear scientists—will have hindered Iran’s progress in some significant way. It is also possible that President Obama, who has said on more than a few occasions that he finds the prospect of a nuclear Iran “unacceptable,” will order a military strike against the country’s main weapons and uranium-enrichment facilities.

But none of these things—least of all the notion that Barack Obama, for whom initiating new wars in the Middle East is not a foreign-policy goal, will soon order the American military into action against Iran—seems, at this moment, terribly likely. What is more likely, then, is that one day next spring, the Israeli national-security adviser, Uzi Arad, and the Israeli defense minister, Ehud Barak, will simultaneously telephone their counterparts at the White House and the Pentagon, to inform them that their prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, has just ordered roughly one hundred F-15Es, F-16Is, F-16Cs, and other aircraft of the Israeli air force to fly east toward Iran—possibly by crossing Saudi Arabia, possibly by threading the border between Syria and Turkey, and possibly by traveling directly through Iraq’s airspace, though it is crowded with American aircraft. (It’s so crowded, in fact, that the United States Central Command, whose area of responsibility is the greater Middle East, has already asked the Pentagon what to do should Israeli aircraft invade its airspace. According to multiple sources, the answer came back: do not shoot them down.)

Singaporean Skeptic

Rather than giving token privileges, increase the allowance of people forced into national servitude. Provide people who have served, free medical care for themselves and their families for life. It is not so much to ask given the amount of money our government squanders (on stupid projects like the YOG).

**** Saving SM Goh <http://singaporedesk.blogspot.com/2010/08/saving-sm-goh.html>
Singapore Notes

What is diificult to swallow is the editorial line that Goh - "or any leader" - can do only so much to bring about change, specifically, he "cannot dream for you". So the Swiss Standard of Living was really just for him and his immediates, and not for the general citizenry funding his salary and perks? Was Martin Luther King's "I have a dream" speech meant for him alone or the populace? It's easy to be cynical about "leaders" when they refuse, or don't know how, to lead the way. Here's the constructive advice: It's time to step aside for others who will, and can, do a better job.
