Think Progress

U.S. Chamber of Commerce President Tom Donohue, who last year called for further “scientific inquiry” into climate science because of a “cooling trend,” today rebuked Apple for leaving his organization.

Adobe's decision to give Flash developers a way to craft iPhone applications is an "end-around" Apple's decision to ban Flash Player from its popular smartphone, an analyst said today.

**** iPhone App Store Developers Aren't Getting Rich, And Why That's Not A Problem <http://www.edibleapple.com/iphone-app-store-developers-arent-getting-rich-and-why-thats-not-a-problem/>
Edible Apple

The key thing about the app store is that it actually gives you the opportunity to get in a game dominated by 7-footers. It gives you the opportunity to to strike it rich. Actually accomplishing that, however, is entirely different story.

**** Apple’s Mighty Mouse Never Lived Up To Its Name. And Now It Can’t. <http://www.techcrunch.com/2009/10/07/apples-mighty-mouse-never-lived-up-to-its-name-and-now-it-cant/>
MG Siegler, TechCrunch

It seems pretty clear at this point that Apple is getting ready to release a new mouse, probably with some kind of multi-touch capabilities, that is probably attached to some new iMacs. No one is happier about that than me, as I hate the current Mighty Mouse. But it looks like Apple may not have a chance to create a device that lives up to that name this time around, as someone else has won the trademark for the name “Mighty Mouse.”

**** Review: Pagehand 1.0 Word Processor <http://rss.macworld.com/click.phdo?i=f02a095363214069041aac13f75a2cf3>
William Porter, Macworld

Pagehand 1.0.6 has the most elegant user interface of any word processor I’ve ever used. By “elegant,” I mean that the exceptional beauty of the program is closely related to the program’s ease of use. But Pagehand’s elegance is aristocratic. It’s not meant for menial work like, oh, index creation or outlining. Pagehand is like a Mont Blanc “writing instrument,” designed for individuals whose writing needs are simple enough that they have time to enjoy the experience of writing.

AT&T subscribers still won’t be able to use their iPhones as wireless modems for their computers, despite the carrier’s reversed position on Internet-phone applications.

**** Flash On The iPhone <http://devwhy.blogspot.com/2009/10/flash-on-iphone.html>
Louis Gerbarg, /dev/why!?!

Now, the notion that what this thing emits is indistinguishable from something Xcode emits is laughable. They are very different, and not in a good way. While the apps may get acceptable frame rates on an iPhone 3GS, they don't on earlier hardware, and they almost certainly use substantially more battery power than native games.

Media coverage has tarred Ruth Reichl's magazine as elite and stuffy. But it was so much richer than that.

**** In Search Of Chinese Science <http://www.thenewatlantis.com/publications/in-search-of-chinese-science>
John Derbyshire, The New Atlantis

It would be interesting to know what Joseph Needham would have made of the new China, with its heroic materialism, its teeming commercialism, its bumptious militarism, and its sinister, vengeful race-nationalism. Probably he would have deplored much of it, while reminding us that at least Chinese scientists no longer have to work in caves and derelict pagodas.

**** Gourmet To All That <http://www.nytimes.com/2009/10/08/opinion/08kimball.html>
Christopher Kimball, New York Times

Is American magazine publishing on the verge of being devoured by the democratic economics of the Internet? Has the media industry fully become an everyman’s playing field, without the need for credentials or paid membership? Or, to ask the questions that every media executive is really whispering, “Will I have a job next year?”

Michael Dirda, Washington Post

This year marks the 50th anniversary of "The Tin Drum," the first and best-known novel of Nobel Prize-winning author Günter Grass. While its narrator, the 3-foot-tall Oskar Matzerath, may be small in stature, his story is epic in scale -- nothing less than the history of Germany during the first half of the 20th century, told through the experiences of one family.

The appeals-court panel on Wednesday agreed with a ruling last year that a 2006 Far Eastern Economic Review story improperly tied Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and his father, the former prime minister, to corruption. The court also found the Review improperly suggested the Lees used libel lawsuits to cover up misdeeds.

**** Singapore Yet To Return RI Airspace Control <http://www.thejakartapost.com/news/2009/10/08/s039pore-yet-return-ri-airspace-control.html>
Fadli, The Jakarta Post

The Singaporean government seems unwilling to return control over Indonesia's airspace in the Riau Islands province, for economic and strategic reasons, a Batam airport official says.

Based on the 2009 Flight Law, Indonesia's airspace over Riau Islands should be returned to Indonesia, Tevi Amir, the chief air traffic controller at Batam's Hang Nadim Airport, said Tuesday. The airspace over the province had been under Singaporean control for around 10 years because of the limited capacity of Indonesia's radar systems, but this issue was no longer relevant, Tevi said.

**** Is Singapore Becoming A Nation Of Immigrants? <http://theonlinecitizen.com/2009/10/is-singapore-becoming-a-nation-of-immigrants/>
Amanda Lee, The Online Citizen

A nation is like a tree. Even if the tree crown is beautiful and is a home to many organisms living together, it is very important to remember the roots. The tree crown represents the different immigrants and Singaporeans living together and making Singapore a progressive society and nation. However, we must not lose our ancestral roots which are us – Singaporeans.
